Zane Rowe, a promising Class of 2027 EDGE prospect from Denton Guyer High School in Texas, has announced his decommitment from Oklahoma. The 6-foot-5, 225-pound defensive standout, ranked as the No. 49 overall player and No. 8 EDGE in his class by the On3 Industry Rankings, was the lone 2027 pledge for coach Brent Venables' program.

The announcement on Monday has left Oklahoma fans stunned, with some taking to social media to express their frustration.

"Just go do your math homework and don’t worry about committing to another school anytime soon," a fan wrote.
“What is going on in Muskogee?” another posted.

Rowe's decision comes just months after he initially committed to the Sooners in April. After his pledge, Rowe cited the program’s family-oriented culture as a key factor.

“What sold me was their passion and care for their players on the field and off the field. They are very family oriented and I’m a big family guy,” Rowe told Sooner Scoop. “They have a great support system from their fans. And I love the OU culture.”

Rowe’s decision mirrors the path of his former high school teammate, Kevin Sperry, who decommitted from Oklahoma and flipped to Florida State late in the recruiting process.

Now signed with the Seminoles, Sperry praised FSU’s system.

“(FSU) told me they want me to be the quarterback of this class,” Sperry told Warchant after flipping in November. “I felt like I fit in perfectly with their offense and what they want from their quarterbacks. I always had a high respect for them, even going into my decision to choose Oklahoma. They were in my top three.”

Oklahoma recently signed the No. 16 recruiting class for 2025, but Rowe's loss adds to the challenges facing its future classes, which currently feature three commitments, including four-star quarterback Jaden O’Neal.

Sophomore standout Zane Rowe explores new horizons after Oklahoma exit

Zane Rowe, a standout sophomore at Denton Guyer High School, surprised many when he committed to Oklahoma early in his recruitment. His father, Dustin Rowe, revealed to Sooners On SI that the decision caught their family off guard.

Before committing, the talented EDGE player visited programs like Texas, Texas A&M, Georgia, Nebraska, Baylor and others. Rowe boasts over 30 offers from major programs, including USC, Oregon, Miami, Ole Miss, Texas Tech and Oklahoma State.

In 2024, Rowe attended Oklahoma's Brent Venables Elite Camp and other events, where he formed strong bonds with Venables and defensive ends coach Miguel Chavis.

Rowe admired Chavis’ relaxed yet demanding coaching style and felt a personal connection with Venables, who shared similar values.

“Coach Venables, we have really the same mindset and similar backgrounds, so it was really cool to bond with him," Rowe said. "We had a deep conversation when he accepted my commitment. He was just like, ‘You have a lot of determination in your voice,’ he told me about my decision."

Rowe shined on the field in 2024, tallying 75 tackles, 19 tackles for loss, nine sacks, 19 QB hurries and four forced fumbles.
