Pro Football Hall of Famer Devin Hester was wowed by Derrick Rose in high school

Derrick Rose, the NBA's youngest MVP, surprised many fans by announcing his retirement on Thursday (Sept. 26). Shams Charania of The Athletic confirmed the news on X, formerly Twitter:

"After 15 NBA seasons, Derrick Rose is retiring from basketball. Rose, the youngest MVP in NBA history, tells @TheAthletic : 'The next chapter is about chasing my dreams and sharing my growth.'"

We all saw Rose's ability in the NBA, but he was a menace in high school. In one of his games for Simeon, the point guard came up against Brandon Jennings' No. 1 Oak Hill Academy. With 28 points, nine assists and eight rebounds, the 2008-09 Rookie of the Year led his team to an upset win.

Pro Football Hall of Famer and four-time Pro Bowl winner Devin Hester was impressed by Rose's performance and compared him with basketball legend Michael Jordan:

"I heard he was good, but I didn't know he was this good. He's like a Michael Jordan for his team," Hester said.

Before starting his collegiate career with the University of Memphis, Rose helped Simeon win back-to-back championships, making them the first team in the Chicago Division to achieve such feat. In his senior year, he averaged 25.2 points, 9.1 assists, 8.8 rebounds and 3.4 steals.

Derrick Rose's retirement post on social media

Derrick Rose took to Instagram to share a heartfelt message for the game and the fans. The three-time All-Star shared a picture of him reading a newspaper with a message on the cover page.

"You believed in me through the highs and the lows, my constant when everything else seemed uncertain," the post read. "You turned the court into my sanctuary, a home where I could express myself freely. ... You told me it's okay to say goodbye, reassuring me that you'll always be a part of me, no matter where life takes me."

Rose also spoke about his retirement with ESPN and said that he is "confident" in his decision. He also said that it was the right time to make that decision:

"Knowing that I gave my all to the game, I feel confident in my decision. Basketball was just the beginning for me. Now, it's important that I give my all to my family — they deserve that."

With his basketball playing career over, what do you think is next for the 2010-11 NBA MVP?
