In a significant move for the Houston Cougars' basketball program, 5-star forward Chris Cenac Jr. has officially committed to Coach Kelvin Sampson's 2025 recruiting class. Cenac, ranked No. 7 overall in the ESPN class of 2025, becomes the highest-rated recruit ever to join the Cougars.
He chose Houston over several prominent programs, including LSU, Arkansas, Kentucky, Auburn, and Tennessee. Speaking to 247Sports on his decision, Cenac said:
"I just like the coaching staff a lot, I like their plan to develop me, and I like coming into a winning program," I'm looking forward to producing and helping them win more, but the main thing is development. I want to be ready for the next level."
Houston's recruiting success has been bolstered by the team's promising future, which includes the return of the 6-foot-4 experienced point guard Milos Uzan and the addition of 6-foot-4 five-star point guard Kingston Flemings, who is ranked among the top point guards in the nation. Cenac believes the strong point guard play was a key factor in his decision.
"The point guard situation played a big part," Cenac said. "I can't produce or look good without a good point guard, and that's definitely something I'm excited about."
As Houston continues to target additional talent, including five-star forward Koa Peat, the Cougars are positioning themselves as a future powerhouse in college basketball.
What Chris Cenac Jr.'s commitment means for the Houston Cougars
Cenac's commitment marks the third top-20 player to join Houston's 2025 class. Having already attracted other top-tier talent, including 5-star shooting guard Isiah Harwell and highly rated point guard Kingston Flemings, they now hold the second spot in the ESPN team rankings, just behind powerhouse Duke.
Over the years, Sampson and his staff have proven adept at developing players and turning three-star recruits like Marcus Sasser and Jamal Shead into NBA players. With this new wave of elite recruits, the Cougars are poised for continued success on the national stage.
