NBA legend and Kiyan’s father, Carmelo Anthony, has revealed he would consider high school basketball if he ever goes into coaching.
Carmelo is currently enjoying his post-retirement phase after drawing curtains on a 19-year NBA career. Although the ninth all-time leading scorer in NBA history has several engagements, Anthony revealed that he would be interested in becoming a high school basketball coach.
The veteran revealed this on the latest episode of his 7 PM in Brooklyn with Carmelo Anthony podcast, which premiered on Nov 26, 2024.
The 40-year-old told his former New York Knicks teammate, Iman Shumpert, that he’s not interested in managing in the NBA at the moment, but would consider high school coaching.
“I would take over a high school program. I don’t want to go nowhere but I would take a high school program. What am I going to college for? I ain’t coaching the pros. I don’t have to do that. I’d rather put my passion into high school,” Carmelo said at the (01:16:30) mark of the podcast.
Carmelo Anthony’s high school career
Although nothing suggests that Anthony will take up a coaching position anytime soon, his passion for high school basketball stems from his early career as a player.
Anthony attended Townson Catholic for the first three years of high school. During his time at the school, he helped Townson to a Conference title and was named Baltimore City/County Player of the Year.
The former NBA player averaged 23.0 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game during his time at Towson, including a 37-point, 17-rebound, nine-assist, six-block performance early in his junior season.
The third overall pick in the 2003 NBA draft capped off his time at Towson with an impressive performance in the Baltimore Catholic League tournament final, scoring the team's last 16 points, including four 3-pointers.
Carmelo spent his senior year at Oak Hill, where his profile continued to rise. During his time at the school, Carmelo averaged 21.7 points and 8.1 rebounds per game for a 32-1 Oak Hill team that finished the year ranked No. 3 in the USA Today Super 25.
One of his memorable moments at Oak Hill came when he faced a certain Lebron James, scoring 34 points and grabbing 14 rebounds to lead his team to a memorable win.
