The Pacific Palisades bushfires in Los Angeles County charred Palisades Charter High School, which has nearly 3,000 students and employees. But there's a beacon of hope for the school's future, sports reporter Tarek Fattal said.
On Friday, the Palisades Charter alumnus, a senior reporter covering high school sports for SBLive Sports, posted a video on X, giving a glimpse at the school's infrastructure after the wildfire.
Fattal investigated the damage and scoured the campus for more than an hour, capturing video and images. He said, albeit with some damage, most buildings remain intact.
"I felt it meaningless to go cover a basketball game or even do anything sport-related when there were people wondering if a long-time standing high school was even still here. ... After being around the whole campus now, things are gonna be OK for Palisades High School. ... Just wanted to show you that a lot of Palisades High School is OK, and this community is going to rebuild," Fattal said.
In a Facebook post, Palisades Charter wrote about the school's situation amid the ongoing wildfire and reiterated the same sentiment for its future.
"Many spaces are NOT visibly damaged by fire, including Gilbert Hall, Mercer Hall, most classroom buildings, gyms, the baseball field, MGAC/pool, the Stadium by the Sea, the Quad, and more," the post read.
"Additionally, a significant portion -- now estimated at over 40%-- has either been damaged or destroyed. Due to the damage and potential hazards, such as asbestos, PCBs, black carbon, and other toxins, we must limit access to the campus."
Palisades Charter boasts an array of A-list alumni
Palisades Charter High School is not just known for its academics and athletics; it boasts an array of A-List alumni and holds significant nostalgia for Hollywood as well.
Celebrities who attended Palisades Charter include J.J. Abrams, Jeff Bridges, Katey Sagal and Jennifer Jason Leigh.
The high school has remained a popular pick for filmmakers since the 1970s. Classics such as "Carrie," "Freaky Friday" and "Crazy/Beautiful" were filmed on its campus. Palisades Charter was also featured in multiple TV shows as well. The list includes "Modern Family," "Teen Wolf" and "Project X."
Celebs such as Sara Foster, Jaime Lee Curtis and Chris Pratt have voiced their concerns regarding the damage to life and property caused by the wildfire.
On Jan. 8, Pratt tweeted about the grave situation.
"Please send prayers and strength tonight to everyone in Los Angeles affected by these devastating fires. Los Angeles is in a state of emergency and over 30,000 have been ordered to evacuate," Pratt wrote.
The situation in Los Angeles is tense, and there have been multiple reports that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is considering canceling the 97th Oscars, which are scheduled to take place on March 2. However, the Hollywood Reporter has refuted the speculation.
