Boston Celtics legend Paul Pierce has revealed he would never forget when he hit a game-winner in high school.
Pierce attended Inglewood High School, where he joined the basketball team in his junior year after being ineligible to play for two years. He eventually excelled, highlighted by scoring a memorable game-winner. Later, he achieved legendary NBA status with the Boston Celtics, winning the championship in 2008.
Speaking to KG Certified, the Kansas City Alumni said he still remembers how he hit his first game-winner at the buzzer. The YouTube video of the conversation was uploaded on November 28.
“I never forget on JV, I hit my first game-winner. We were down one, I remember somebody else went up for the shot and I was in the perfect spot right here,” Pierce told KG Certified.
“The ball came off and at the same time I jumped put it back up and I fell to the ground right here. The whole team come rush me on. This is my first game-winner ever, junior varsity. First time I went to G at the buzzer, I just remember falling right on this spot right here on the ground," he continued.
“Like, yeah, yeah, everybody come jumped on me yeah, yeah, never forget my first game-winner right here," Pierce added.
Pierce would later commit to Kansas after leaving Inglewood before going on to make his mark in the NBA with the Boston Celtics.
Paul Pierce’s high school career
Before attending Kansas, Paul Pierce showcased his talent at Inglewood High School, despite being cut from the basketball team for his first two years. Though he considered transferring, he chose to stay and focused on building his strength in the gym.
This decision did pay off as Pierce was one of the best players on the team at the end of his junior year, averaging 27 points, 11 rebounds, and four assists per game. His performance earned him California's Mr. Basketball and was also honored as a McDonald's All-American.
