"I led the state of California in scoring": Alijah Arenas' mom Laura Govan opens up about her high school basketball history

Laura Govan is best known for being a former reality star, Gilbert Arenas' ex and the mother of five-star prospect Alijah Arenas, but she also used to play basketball herself. During her appearance on Carlos King's "Reality with the King" podcast on Tuesday, she opened up about her high school basketball career.

"Most people don't even know I played ball," Govan said (42:45). "I played basketball all my life and I'm actually good and those who know me know right. There was two years I led the state of California and scoring in high school."

She added that not only did she play in high school, but she also played overseas. Govan then said she coached her daughter and her son, Alijah.

Despite feuding with her ex, she complimented Gilbert Arenas and said that he "came through" for the kids because he hired a trainer for them, who is now close to the family.

"He's s not just like some babysitter, but they're always in the gym and he trains them, even with Alijah," Govan said (43:23).

Govan and Arenas separated in 2014. Govan has custody of their four children, including Alijah.

Laura Govan, from high school basketball star to reality TV star

Laura Govan played high school basketball for Oakland High School and averaged 30.0 points per game. This led her to get a full scholarship to play for New Mexico State University.

She eventually started working for the Sacramento Kings as part of their public relations department. There, she met the father of her children while he was playing for the Golden State Warriors. They eventually started dating and had four kids together, though the relationship ended bitterly.

She joined the cast of the popular TV show "Basketball Wives LA" in 2011 as Arenas' partner. She often appeared with her sister Gloria, who was married to then-LA Lakers star Matt Barnes.
