Tim Walz, the Vice Presidential candidate for the Democratic Party, was a high school football coach before joining the world of politics. The 60-year-old Democrat was the defensive coordinator at Mankato West High School in Minnesota from 1996 to 2002, according to The Sporting News.
During his time with the Scarlets, Walz oversaw a tough period and was tasked with turning the fortunes of a struggling Mankato West that was 0-27 before Walz's arrival.
The 41st Governor of Minnesota not only battled the storm but also established a winning culture. He helped the team to its first state championship in 1999, shutting down opposing offenses with his 4-4 defense.
However, former USC quarterback Max Browne tore up the Vice Presidential candidate's scheme by analyzing it a few weeks ago on his Instagram account. Walz was quick to comment on the video.
"Max — Saw your analysis of my 4-4. Honored to have it, because you’re a beast. Would love to talk football with you," read the comment.
Walz got his wish, as he caught up with Browne on Wednesday, as per Browne's Twitter account. The duo discussed the former Mankato defensive coordinator's time at the high school, and Walz even joked about being "super conservative."
"That was base. You can do a lot out of that, you can move to 5-3 pretty easy," Walz said while talking about his defensive schemes in high school, as per Max Browne's Twitter. "This might, political people might find this surprising, I'm super conservative in a lot of ways."
Walz's political career began in 2004, and he became Minnesota's governor in 2018 after defeating the Republican Party's Jeff Johnson.
Mankato West High School's season so far
The Mankato West Scarlets are 5-4 through nine games this season. They are second in the Northstar-South Gold Football conference behind only the Chanhassen Storm, who hold a record of 5-1 so far in the conference.
Mankato West's season began with a dominant win over the Northfield Raiders. However, they failed to back that up the next week and dropped their first game of the season against Andover High School.
The Scarlets then won two in a row to improve to 3-1, but they dropped their next three games, slipping to 3-4. The high school team's up-and-down season continued as it won the next two games.
The Scarlets' next game is against their city rivals, Mankato East, on Saturday, October 26.
