Trash-talking is pretty common in basketball, and TCU star Hailey Van Lith knows a lot about that. During a 2019 appearance in Slam's "Day in the Life" YouTube series, the then-high school star said she learned plenty about trash-talking from watching NBA greats.
She admitted that she does not talk trash that much compared to others, but she will if pushed.
"I'm not a big trash talker," Van Lith said. "But like if you come for me or my teammates, like, I don't mess around with that. Like, I'll say something back. I've heard that Michael Jordan was a big one." (4:43)
She later admitted she does not think trash-talking is bad.
"I don't think it's a bad thing. I think it's a competitive thing," she said. (4:55)
After transferring from LSU, Van Lith plays with the TCU Horned Frogs. While she helped the Tigers go on a deep run into the NCAA national championships, she ultimately had a disappointing season as she felt she did not fit the school's system. She originally played for Louisville but transferred to LSU looking to get drafted into the WNBA, but that did not happen.
Hailey Van Lith used to train with her dad in high school
Hailey Van Lith was the star player of Cashmere High School in Washington state. While training with the rest of her team, she had one-on-one practices with her father, Cory Van Lith.
"He's taught me everything I know about basketball, so, he's the reason that I am where I am today and his eyes," she said. (3:19)
Her dad then explained that she was a little different from other girls growing up.
"Haley was different when she was little," he said. "She had dolls. She loved watching basketball. She watched all the grades, and she was very early. She liked that." (3:43)
Hailey Van Lith was a five-star recruit from the Class of 2020 and was so good that she earned the attention of Kobe Bryant. The late NBA legend wanted Van Lith to mentor his daughter Gigi and even flew to Cashmere once to watch her play.
