In a significant recruiting move, Chaminade-Madonna Prep's three-star defensive tackle Donta Simpson has switched his commitment from Maryland to the University of Miami. The 6-foot-3, 285-pound DL, citing the importance of being close to home and fulfilling a lifelong dream, announced on Friday evening.
Simpson, who was offered a spot on the Hurricanes' roster during a recent visit, didn't take long to make his decision. Five days after receiving the offer, he became the 20th commitment in Miami’s 2025 recruiting class under coach Mario Cristobal.
"The Hurricanes are right for me because it’s my hometown and there’s nothing like playing at home," Simpson told On3. "I feel like they could develop me in the best way possible. My favorite thing about Miami is the culture there, me and my dad grew up Canes fans so it was only right to commit to them."
This summer, Simpson returned to Coral Gables shortly after his offer to observe the team's practice sessions. His commitment adds depth to Miami's defensive front, joining four-star EDGE recruit Herbert Scroggins.
Reflecting on his journey, Simpson said:
"It was very special to me because early in my recruitment I didn’t think they was gonna have interest because everywhere I go I’m always underestimated. But now colleges are starting to figure it out."
As a junior, Donta Simpson demonstrated his prowess with 43 tackles, 7.5 sacks, an interception returned for a touchdown and two fumble recoveries. The addition of Simpson boosts Miami’s class to the 12th spot nationally and third in the ACC, as per On3 Industry Team Recruiting Rankings.
The Hurricanes' 2025 class now ranks 10th on the 247Sports composite rankings and is poised to sign a third consecutive top-10 class, following their fourth-ranked 2024 and seventh-ranked 2023 classes.
Donta Simpson solidifies Miami's defensive line with his commitment to the Hurricanes
Donta Simpson is joining fellow teammate Chris Ewald, a four-star cornerback, at the Hurricanes. This commitment follows the signings of safety Zaquan Patterson and wide receiver Joshisa Trader from Chaminade-Madonna in the 2024 class. In the past two seasons, Simpson has tallied 72 tackles, 28 tackles for loss and 12 sacks, showcasing his defensive prowess.
After attending the Hurricanes' first fall practice on Wednesday, Donta Simpson's decision to commit to Miami was reinforced.
"I've been looking at Miami my whole life," he said. "I always wanted to play for them."
Chaminade-Madonna has a history of producing players for Miami, with current roster members Patterson and freshman wide receiver JoJo Trader. Simpson, the first commitment of August after five in July, received his offer following two visits in July.
"I like it already, it feels like family," Simpson said. "The people are great here."
With newly added transfers Simeon Barrow, C.J. Clark and Marley Cook set to enter their final collegiate season in 2024, Miami's need for depth at defensive tackle is evident. Donta Simpson's addition helps address this need.
