Joyce Edwards made her debut for the South Carolina Gamecocks on Tuesday against the Memphis Tigers. The freshman forward recorded a team-high 19 points, 12 rebounds and two assists in the 106-63 exhibition win.
Edwards is one of the highly anticipated recruits, and she is solidifying her potential as a key player under coach Dawn Staley. However, to fully understand the excitement surrounding her, one needs to look back at her high school career.
Edwards' journey to the Gamecocks began in Camden, South Carolina, where she played for Camden High School. She averaged 26.0 points, 4.6 assists and 14.6 rebounds per game in her freshman year.
In her sophomore year, she recorded 23.8 ppg, 4.2 apg and 12.3 rpg in 28 games. She racked up 28.5 ppg, 2.9 apg and 13.6 rpg in her junior year. In her senior year, she averaged 31.3 ppg, 13.3 rpg, 4.0 apg and 2.7 blocks per game.
In her senior season, she led Camden to a 25-3 record and a deep playoff run in the South Carolina High School League (SCHSL) state tournament.
Edwards' ability to take over games made her the most sought-after high school player in the state. She was known for her versatility as a 6-foot-3 forward, with the ability to play in the post, shoot from mid-range and defend multiple positions.
Her offensive efficiency was impressive, as she consistently shot over 50.0% from the field.

By the time she completed her high school career, Joyce Edwards had racked up an impressive list of accolades. She was a five-time MVP winner in high-profile tournaments, including the McDonald’s All-American Game and the Nike Hoop Summit.
Her performances earned her national recognition, as she was named the 2023-24 Gatorade National Player of the Year. In addition, she was selected as the U18 FIBA AmeriCup MVP.
One of Edwards’ standout high school moments came in the 2023 U18 FIBA Americas Championship, where she led Team USA to a gold medal. She averaged 14.5 ppg, 7.8 rpg and 2.3 steals per game in the tournament.
Over her four years at Camden High, she accumulated 3,035 points and 1,471 rebounds. Her defensive skills were just as impactful, averaging 2.6 bpg and 4.5 spg.
