In a spectacular finale to Georgia's high school football season, the Grayson Rams secured the GHSA 6A State Championship with a 38-24 victory over the Carrollton Trojans at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Wednesday.
The Rams delivered a defensive masterclass to disrupt Carrollton’s high-octane offense and star quarterback Juju Lewis, especially in the second half when they outscored the Trojans 21-0.
Fans celebrated Grayson’s triumph with unbridled enthusiasm, with one saying:
“JuJu from Colorado got whopped!”
"They beat a good Thompson team this year to," another fan said.
"Juju looked pretty bad. Maybe the Salters commit rattled him," one fan said.
Here is how other fans expressed their reactions:
"Hahaha. Carrollton always chokes in the biggest games. Can’t win it all!," a fan said.
"Congrats to their defense faking injuries all game," another fan said.
Key to Grayson’s triumph was junior linebacker Tyler Atkinson, a five-star recruit who recorded eight tackles, three tackles for loss, and two sacks. Senior cornerback Vaughn Mitchom also had a stellar performance, intercepting Lewis twice and making a critical pick in the fourth quarter.
Elijah Miller powered Grayson’s ground game, tallying 109 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries. With the game tied at 24 late in the third quarter, Miller’s two-yard touchdown run put the Rams ahead.
Moments later, Mitchom’s second interception gave Grayson excellent field position, leading to Miller’s 25-yard scoring run on fourth-and-1, sealing the victory.
This victory marked Grayson’s first championship since 2020 and their fourth overall since 2011.
Grayson shuts down Juju Lewis' Carrollton’s dream season
After falling behind 10-0 early in the first quarter, Carrollton’s star quarterback Julian Lewis rallied his team with two first-half touchdown passes, giving the Trojans a 14-10 lead.
A second-quarter field goal extended their advantage to seven points. Despite their strong start, the Rams fought back, tying the game at 17 with a 93-yard drive capped by Elijah Miller’s short touchdown run.
Grayson, which had won 13 straight games since a one-point season-opening loss to Collins Hill, struggled offensively after their first two scores. A series of punts left them searching for momentum, but their defense held firm.
When Texas commit Nick Brooks was ejected for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, Carrollton gained excellent field position but failed to capitalize, as Grayson’s defense forced a punt.
Special teams play added drama as Carrollton’s Peyton Zachary returned a punt 54 yards for an apparent touchdown, only for it to be nullified by a holding penalty.
The Rams (14-1) closed the season on a dominant 14-game win streak, while Carrollton (14-1) ended their historic run empty-handed.
“This means a bunch,” Grayson head coach Santavious Bryant said. “Any time we can do something big like this for our community and put our community on a big stage like this, this is huge. Bringing the trophy back to Gwinnett County, that’s what we wanted to do.”
Juju Lewis, who finished high school with 11,010 passing yards and 144 touchdowns—ranking seventh and fifth all-time in Georgia, respectively—threw for 333 yards and two scores but struggled against Grayson’s relentless defense. The Rams sacked Lewis four times, forced two interceptions, and recovered a late fumble to cement their dominance.
