The son of former Ohio State quarterback and current ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit, Chase Herbstreit has committed to play for Sherrone Moore's Michigan Wolverines in the 2025 football season.

Joining the Wolverines as the second quarterback recruit in their 2025 class, Herbstreit will compete alongside Bryce Underwood, the nation’s top overall prospect and a five-star talent who signed with Michigan during the early signing period.

Herbstreit, listed at 6-2 and 185 pounds, recently completed his senior season at Cincinnati's St. Xavier High School. In his final campaign, he showcased his dual-threat abilities by throwing for 1,600 yards and 18 touchdowns while adding 649 rushing yards and eight scores on the ground. His leadership propelled St. Xavier to a regional final appearance.

Despite not holding a rating in ESPN's 2025 class rankings or earning a star designation from 247Sports, Herbstreit brings significant potential to Michigan’s roster.

Chase Herbstreit carries family legacy to Michigan, following in his father Kirk's footsteps

Chase's father, Kirk Herbstreit, an ESPN analyst and former Ohio State quarterback, was a four-year letterman for the Buckeyes from 1989-93. Chase’s decision adds to the legacy of his brothers Tye, Jake, and Zak, who also pursued college football.

Tye and Jake began their careers as walk-ons at Clemson, with Jake later transferring to Ohio State to explore other interests. Meanwhile, Zak Herbstreit is currently in his fourth season as a walk-on tight end for the Buckeyes despite facing significant health challenges earlier in his career, including a heart condition that required hospitalization.

Though unranked in ESPN’s 2025 recruiting class, On3.com’s scouting director Charles Power sees potential for Herbstreit to surpass his recruitment rankings.

"The 6-foot-2, 190-pounder looks to have a strong grasp on the pro-style offensive scheme and is comfortable working from under center. He's added arm strength and displays good zip on intermediate passes," Power stated in October.
"We've also seen Herbstreit become more of a run threat as a senior. He's effective in avoiding pass rushers and is more than capable of picking up chunks of yardage as a scrambler and on designed runs."

Chase Herbstreit becomes the 23rd member of head coach Sherrone Moore’s inaugural recruiting class, which is highlighted by Underwood and features nine recruits ranked in the ESPN 300.
