Littleton High School in Colorado has suspended all football-related activities due to an ongoing investigation into allegations of sexual assault among the football team members.
This decision was announced to the whole school community by Superintendent Todd Lambert and Principal Dr. Thomas Velazquez.
"Littleton High administration, along with the Littleton Police Department, are investigating allegations of assault among members of the LHS football team," Principal Velazquez stated in the letter. "We were made aware of the allegations through an anonymous tip yesterday."
On Friday, the Littleton Public Schools (LPS) district provided an update on the situation. They explained that both the Littleton Police Department and the school are fully investigating the allegations in detail.
In response to the investigation, Littleton High School has canceled Friday's football practice, a team dinner scheduled for the same day and a scrimmage scheduled for Saturday.
The Littleton Police Department, confirming the ongoing investigation to CBS Colorado, stated that they currently cannot provide additional details.
Superintendent Lambert addressed the Littleton Public Schools community, stating that both the School and the local police are fully engaged in investigating the reported assaults.
Principal Velazquez, in a letter directed to the families of football team members, emphasized the seriousness with which the administration is treating the matter.
"We will fully cooperate with the Littleton Police Department as they continue the investigation," Velazquez assured. "We will keep you updated as we are able, as this situation evolves and as we receive more details that will inform our next steps."
Littleton High School poised for a competitive 2024 football season
Littleton High School is looking forward to a series of intense matchups in the upcoming season. The season opener on August 30, 2024, against the Englewood Pirates will set the stage.
The Lions will face a variety of formidable opponents, including both conference rivals and strong non-conference teams like Jefferson, Mullen and Valor Christian.
In recent years, Littleton High School has consistently become better. In the previous season, they ended with a team that typically scored over 25 points, and a defense which continually kept their rivals below 20.
Players like Jake Thompson (quarterback) and Mark Davis (wide receiver) have played a principal role in the team's victory.
Littleton High School program has a rich history of excellence, including undefeated seasons in 1967, 1968 and 2013, and numerous league championships. They won titles in 1967, 1968, 1972, 2007.
The Lions’ crowning achievement came in 2013 when they captured the state championship.
