Auburn running back commit Alvin Henderson has reached another milestone as he approaches the end of his high school football career. The 4-star RB became the first high school rusher in Alabama history to reach 9,937 career rushing yards.
He broke the 27-year record of 9,838 yards set by Mac Campbell of Alexandria High School. Speaking in a postgame interview, Henderson dedicated the record to his father who passed away when he was 13:
“Really and truly, it means a lot. You know, my father passed when I was 13. And obviously, you know, I was just getting started with my football career. And I know he probably looking down on me. Not just my dad but, you know, my great-granddad too.
"That means a lot to me and a lot to my family. You know, they put a lot of time and dedication into me, supporting me and traveling with me all around the world. I feel like me accomplishing this is just giving back to him.”
Henderson’s latest record makes it a total of 46 times he’s named in the Alabama High School Athletic Association's record book. He already holds the record for the most points scored in a game with 60 points and the record for the most points scored in a season (408). He's tied for the record number of touchdowns in a game with nine.
Furthermore, he is a joint record holder for the most consecutive games with a touchdown (23) and the most touchdowns in a season (68).
The race to sign Alvin Henderson
Alvin Henderson was offered by 44 programs, according to 247Sports. The top contenders include Penn State, to which he initially committed before flipping to Auburn in June. Alabama and Florida State have been the other top programs invested in signing the No. 6 RB (per On3).
However, Hugh Freeze’s disposition toward Henderson made the difference for him. He said:
“Coach Freeze made me feel like a top priority.”
Alvin Henderson, 5-foot-9 and 190 pounds, led his Elba High School football team to a 40-24 victory over Florala to cap off the regular season. He rushed for 201 yards and four touchdowns on 27 carries as the Tigers closed their regular season with an 8-2 record.
