New Hampton's three-star small forward Mason Blackwood has committed to Mike Rhoades' Penn State, according to On3. The 6-foot-7 forward is the No. 120 overall recruit in the Class of 2025.
This marks Penn State's second commitment after head coach Mike Rhoades recruited 3-star big man Justin Houser from the Phelps School in Malvern, Pa., in June.
Blackwood received offers from Rutgers, Buffalo, Siena, Albany, Boston College, Bryant, and more. However, he chose Penn State because of the coaches.
“I chose Penn State because of the genuine love the coaches showed at Penn State to me and my family,” he said via On3. “I loved the opportunity they presented to me, and the goals they had laid out for me and I felt like I resented with them extremely well and it was a great fit.”
“Coach Rhodes and his staff were always reaching out to me constantly checking up on me about basketball and off court things," Blackwood added. "It was always out of love and care. They showed how passionate they were as a coaching staff and how well they connected with each other. They were all good people and I had much respect for them.”
What kind of player is Penn State getting in Mason Blackwood?
Mason Blackwood is ranked 28th in the small forward position. He has a strong build and has the potential to become a combo forward or a big wing who can knock down shots.
In the EYBL Indy, Blackwood shot 46% from beyond the arc while averaging 13.5 points (58.3% FG) and 6.8 rebounds.
As per On3's scouting report, Blackwood is a good defender who can grab rebounds and switch quickly. However, the New Hampton native would need to work on his dribbling skills.
When asked about his game and how he would add value to the Penn State roster, Mason Blackwood said:
“I would describe my game style as a strong big wing who is athletic, with a competitive mindset and versatile offensively defensively.”
Last season, Penn State finished tied for ninth in the Big Ten Conference. In the NCAA Tournament, they defeated Michigan in the first round but lost to Indiana in the second.
With the addition of two recruits already, head coach Mike Rhoades will look to improve next season. How do you think Mason Blackwood would do at Penn State?
