Last week, sophomore player Jayvion Taylor, from Hopewell High School in Virginia, died during football practice. On Tuesday, New Brockton High School in Alabama witnessed a similar blow when a freshman player tragically died during afternoon practice. The name of the ninth-grade student has not been disclosed.
The incident at New Brockton High School occurred around 4:30 p.m. ET when the player experienced a medical emergency that led to his collapse. Despite being transported to Medical Center Enterprise by Enterprise Rescue, the athlete did not survive.
Coffee County coroner Aaron Woodham expressed the grief felt by all associated with the player.
“This is a very emotional time for the family and Emergency Responders involved,” Woodham said in the statement (via WTVY). “There will be more information released at a later time. Please respect and pray for the family during this difficult time."
The details surrounding the player’s collapse, including the type of drill he was participating in and his prior medical history, remain undisclosed. New Brockton High School coach Jason Barnett was unable to provide comments when reached by media outlets.
The school is renowned for its academic and athletic achievements, having been recognized as the No. 1 athletic program in Massachusetts by Sports Illustrated. But the area faces severe heat risks, with rising temperatures contributing to the challenging conditions for athletes.
In response to the tragic death, a joint investigation will be conducted by Coffee County Sheriff Scott Byrd, the New Brockton Police Department and the Coffee County District Attorney's Office, led by Jame Tarbox. More details are expected to be released as the investigation progresses.
