The Monterey Lady Plainsmen were locked in a close fight against the Arkansas-based Conway Wampus Cats on Friday, but Aaliyah Chavez stepped up to lead her team to victory. The No. 1 ranked overall recruit from the class of 2025 finished with 34 points to help her school secure a 66-62 victory.

The point guard rained several threes in the Lady Plainsmen's comeback, while also showcasing her passing skills. The win improved Monterey's record to 15-1 record, with their only loss coming against Lincoln High School on Nov. 15.

The Texas native is regarded as one of the best overall in her class, though she remains uncommitted to any college so far. Top schools such as Oklahoma, UCLA, Texas Tech, Texas and LSU have made offers and Chavez has already visited some of them, including UCLA and Texas.

As she has shown in the game against Conway, Aaliyah Chavez is an elite three-point shooter, breaking her school's record in most 3-pointers made during a game. She also holds Monterey's record for most points in a single game (57), most points in a career and most points in a season.

In Monterey, Chavez forms a dynamic duo with her co-captain, 2026 recruit Ambrosia Cole, who is also an elite scorer and is the team's No. 2 option. The two are often prominently featured together in Monterey's game promos.

Aaliyah Chavez and Monterey to face off against No. 1 2027 recruit Kaleena Smith and Ontario Christian

After Aaliyah Chavez and Monterey escaped with a win against Conway, the next team they will face is expected to be tougher, as they will be taking on Kaleena Smith and the California-based Ontario Christian Knights on Nov. 30.

Smith just came off a dominant performance against Etiwanda on Nov. 23, with Ontario Christian winning by 74-66. They then dominated Texas-based Duncanville on Duncanville's own home turf, 89-51. Following that win against Duncanville last Friday, the Ontario Christian Knights remained undefeated with a 4-0 record for the 2024-2025 season.

The Monterey Lady Plainsmen vs. Ontario Christian Knights game will be part of the Holiday Hoopfest in Duncanville, Texas and it is expected to be a point guard battle between two top players who share the same position.

Both high school basketball standouts are considered five-star prospects and were also named to the 2024-2025 MaxPreps Preseason All-American Girls Basketball Team.
