Aaliyah Chavez, the No. 1 high school girls' basketball prospect in the class of 2025, has been named the top young Latino athlete to watch in 2025 by Our Esquina, a company that celebrates Latino athletes and decision makers in sports.

The announcement, made on Jan. 2, places the Monterey High School standout ahead of notable names like Hannah Hidalgo, Chad Baker-Mazara and Bella Hines on the prestigious list. Aaliyah Chavez is a basketball prodigy, and her stellar high school career justifies her top spot in the Our Esquina list.

This year, Chavez, a 5-foot-11 senior and five-star recruit from Lubbock, Texas, has been nothing short of extraordinary. On Friday, she led her team to a dominant 89-37 victory over Palo Duro, recording an impressive stat line of 36 points, 13 rebounds, six steals, five assists and one block.

Earlier in the Caprock Classic, Chavez showcased her unprecedented scoring brilliance. She exploded for 53 points, including nine 3-pointers, in Monterey's 89-35 win over Pampa. She followed that up with another stellar performance, dropping 44 points, including seven 3-pointers, in a 77-29 win against Eastwood on December 27.

With a career total of 4,339 points, Chavez has moved to eighth place on the National Federation of High School Associations' all-time scoring list. This season, she's averaging 35.8 points, 9.1 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 3.9 steals per game, numbers that reflect her all-around impact on the court.

Her incredible performances haven't gone unnoticed. Chavez was named the Texas Girls' Basketball Gatorade Player of the Year for the 2023-24 season, during which she also set the state record for the most points scored in a season. All these stats scream her dominance on the court and project her as the most deserving candidate for the top spot in the top young Latino athlete list.

Aaliyah Chavez college commitment still open

While Aaliyah Chavez continues to dominate women's high school basketball, anticipation is high as to which college would secure the commitment of the young guard.

The Lady Plainsmen senior point guard remains uncommitted, though. She received over 27 offers, as per 247Sports. While the list of offers was extensive, the Texas native has trimmed it to only five colleges: UCLA, Oklahoma, Texas, Texas Tech and South Carolina.

In On3 prediction, Oklahoma and UCLA seem neck and neck with 37.0% and 32.3%, respectively. According to Sports Illustrated, the high school basketball queen is seeking a Name, Image, Likeness deal for around $1 million, so it's not surprising that there are delays in her commitment announcement.

Fans may have to wait a little longer for Aaliyah Chavez to announce her college choice, but one thing is certain - wherever she goes, the spotlight will undoubtedly follow.
