The timeless debate over the greatest Heisman Trophy winner took center stage as high school football players Jared Smith, Anquon Fegans, Kj Lacey, and Marcus Harris passionately shared their picks. In a reel shared by "Overtime," players were asked to share their Heisman winner pick better than Reggie Bush, the 2005 Heisman Trophy winner.
Bryce Young, Robert Griffin III, Jameis Winston, and Travis Hunter were quickly dismissed. Even Johnny Manziel, known for his electrifying highlights, failed to win over the crowd. However, Cam Newton’s name sparked unanimous agreement.
“Every school he went to, he was a champion,” Fegans said.
Fans expressed their reactions:
"Cam newton the greatest college athelete of all time," a fan wrote.
"Bro ain’t nobody cooking like Reggie bush was in college brah was the definition of “crazy work”🤣💯 ," another fan said.
Here is how others reacted:
"I think so. He was the team. He had the greatest impact on their team, out of any Heisman winner," a fan said.
"Cam>Tebow>Lamar>Johnny," another fan wrote.
"Cam had the most impactful year in college football history.. no one could’ve done what he’s did with that team in Auburn that year," a fan remarked.
Newton's historic 2010 season was nothing short of legendary. Leading the Auburn Tigers to a flawless 14-0 record and a BCS national championship, he secured 729 first-place Heisman votes, eclipsing stars like Andrew Luck, LaMichael James, and Kellen Moore.
With 4,327 total yards, 51 touchdowns, and just seven interceptions, Newton’s dominance redefined college football. Yet, Newton’s path wasn’t without controversy.
After leaving Florida following legal troubles, he rebuilt his career at Blinn College before joining Auburn. During his 2010 campaign, allegations arose that Newton’s father, Cecil, solicited payment for his son to play at Mississippi State. Although the NCAA investigated, it found no wrongdoing by Newton or Auburn.
Cam Newton questions LSU’s role in NFL stars’ success
LSU alumni like Joe Burrow and Jayden Daniels are excelling in the NFL, but Cam Newton remains skeptical of the narrative branding LSU as a talent powerhouse. Speaking on his show, 4th&1, Newton said the hype benefits LSU’s football program:
“This is great newsletter-worthy stuff. Jayden Daniels, transfer. Joe Burrow, transfer. This is good publicity for LSU. They used Joe Burrow. They’re using Jayden Daniels for their greater good. They’re gonna have that in their newsletters.”
Burrow, initially a backup at Ohio State from 2015 to 2017, transferred to LSU as a graduate student. His exceptional 2019 season at LSU included a 15-0 record, a national championship, and a Heisman Trophy.
Daniels, a top dual-threat recruit from Arizona State, also transferred to LSU. At ASU, he earned a starting role as a true freshman in 2019. After transferring in 2022, Daniels excelled in his final season at LSU, breaking NCAA, SEC, and school records while claiming a Heisman Trophy.
