Kiyan Anthony, the talented son of basketball legend Carmelo Anthony, recently opened up about his friendship with Baylor Bears star VJ Edgecombe. The 17-year-old emphasized how the time spent together in high school has shaped his approach to the game.
In an interview with Jason Jordan on the "League Ready" YouTube channel, the star shooting forward from LuHi reflected on how sharing a room for two years with Edgecombe was more than just basketball; it was a unique learning experience.
“I mean for two years, that [VJ Edgecombe] was my roommate, so basically one of my closest friends, seeing him every day, staying with him every night, you know, being in the same room,” Kiyan shared. (5:15)
“I just learned everything, like from how he approaches the game; you know how he wakes up every morning and how he eats, so I learned from that, and now I am trying to apply that to myself plus of what I already have from my dad, so just seeing him.” he added.
Furthermore, the 6-foot-5 guard also admired the professionalism and the skills of Edgecombe, stating:
"He is a ‘pro’ so just seeing a professional go to work every day, even though it was high school, just seeing it like that."
Kiyan Anthony concluded:
“It was great just to, you know, take away from it, and now stepping into that role, I feel like [I'll do] a good job.”
Kiyan Anthony and Edgecombe formed a solid duo on the court at Long Island Lutheran High School. During his senior year at LuHi, Edgecombe averaged 17.3 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 1.1 blocks per game. His exceptional skills made him a five-star prospect, ultimately paving the way for his college debut with the Baylor Bears on Nov. 4.
Edgecombe committed to the Baylor Bears back in January. On his side, Kiyan Anthony is still in that process, with the big reveal coming on Nov. 15.
Will Kiyan Anthony pick USC over Syracuse?
“It's down to Syracuse and USC,” dad and NBA legend Carmelo Anthony disclosed on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" on Thursday. Since then, hoops fans have speculated that Syracuse will be the ultimate destination for the No. 35 overall prospect in the Class of 2025, per On3. Syracuse certainly has an obvious pull for Kiyan, given his father forged a legacy of his own there.
However, USC isn't out of the picture yet. On the "League Ready" YouTube channel, Kiyan has revealed that his USC visit was the best among his Top 3. Kiyan Anthony has even praised USC for their brilliant track record and getting players drafted.
“They also produce players of my archetype and get them to the league.”
This shows that the young guard has some inclination towards the Trojans. While Syracuse has a whopping 93.7% chance to land the No. 1 shooting guard in New York, hoops fans might be up for a big surprise on November 15.
