Four-star athlete Jakob Weatherspoon committed to Ohio State's 2026 class on Thursday. The commitment doesn’t come as a surprise, given that Weatherspoon is an in-state prospect from Avon High School in Ohio.
Weatherspoon chose Ryan Day's program over schools like Oregon, Penn State and Notre Dame. This decision dealt a double blow to Oregon, as Ohio State had just dominated the Ducks 41-21 in the Rose Bowl on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the Ducks offered Weatherspoon a scholarship just a day before, hoping that a potential win over Ohio State would give them an edge in his recruitment.
Fans wasted no time poking fun at Oregon's two big losses to Ohio State.
"oregon getting stuffed in a locker on the field and off🤣," a fan wrote.
"Ohio State gets another win over the Ducks," one wrote.
"Smart decision young man. Dont make the same mistake Offord, Brew and McNutt made chasing a bag," one wrote.
Weatherspoon has made a name for himself as a versatile athlete capable of excelling at multiple positions. He has shined in various roles for Avon, but his future with the Buckeyes likely lies at cornerback.
Ranked as the No. 7 prospect in Ohio, Weatherspoon represents a significant recruiting win for Day's coaching staff, who successfully kept the in-state talent home. The Buckeyes' coaching staff envisions him as a potential two- or three-year starter.
"Excellent decision young man," one wrote.
"Welcome to the Brotherhood. B⭕️⭕️M," another wrote.
"Welcome to Cbus ! He'll Yeah!!! O H ! Have camped in Avon," a fan added.
Weatherspoon is ranked as the No. 9 athlete in the 2026 class and the No. 157 prospect in the nation according to the On3 Industry Rankings. He capped off his junior season by leading Avon to a state championship. The Ohio State coaching staff and fans expect him to continue his impressive performance with the Buckeyes.
Jakob Weatherspoon shares the reason behind his commitment to Ohio State
Cornerback coach Tim Walton and assistant defensive coach Gerren DuHart have been recruiting Jakob Weatherspoon for Ohio State.
"I love the coaching staff. They're all great dudes," Weatherspoon told Bucknuts. "And it seems like they think highly of me, coach Walt(on) and coach DuHart are in touch every day."
Weatherspoon is the first defensive commit in Ohio State's 2026 class, which already includes three other committed players. The class is currently ranked No. 8 in the nation. Describing his on-field game, Weatherspoon shared with Eleven Warriors:
“I think I’m very dynamic, I have a lot of patience at cornerback. I’ve been working on my footwork all offseason.”
Jakob joins an impressive group at Ohio that includes five-star wide receiver Chris Henry Jr., three-star wide receiver Jaeden Ricketts and four-star tight end Corbyn Fordham.
