Penn State signee Kayden Mingo was the star of the show at Long Island Lutheran's game against La Lumiere on Monday. The teams faced each other at the Hoophall Classic, with Mingo's and Kiyan Anthony's LuHi taking a 68–55 win. Mingo won the MVP honors as he finished with 13 points, six rebounds and four assists for the Crusaders.
On Monday, Hoophall Classic's Instagram page posted the highlights of the No. 43 player in the Class of 2025 dictating the offense, converting shots from the 3-point line and rising for second-chance points.
Kiyan Anthony also pitched in with 16 points and two assists to mark the Crusaders' third consecutive win against the Lakers. Furthermore, Long Island Lutheran has won nine of their last 12 matches, improving their record to 11-5 this season.
The Mingo brothers have been an essential part of LuHi's roster. In the 68–52 win against Orangeville at La Porte Invitational last week, Mingo scored 12 points in 26 minutes on 66.6% shooting, including 60.0% from beyond the arc. His brother, Dylan Mingo, scored 16 points on 50.0% shooting, including 40.0% from the 3-point line.
Furthermore, when Kiyan Anthony was absent due to injury, the Mingo brothers stepped up to win the match against Westminster Academy at the City of Palms Classic on Dec. 21. Dylan had 21 points and grabbed four rebounds while Kayden scored 15 and six rebounds.
Kayden Mingo on head coach Mike Rhoades
Ranked at the No. 4 spot in the combo guard position and No. 2 in New York, Kayden Mingo had 12 offers, according to On3. These included offers from Old Dominion, California, Ole Miss, Notre Dame, Wake Forest, Penn State and more. The 6-foot-1 combo guard visited Penn State on Sep. 7 before signing with the team on Nov. 1.
Kayden Mingo talked about his decision with On3, commending coach Mike Rhoades:
“I like the winning that Coach (Mike) Rhoades has done throughout his career,” Kayden Mingo told On3. “We have a really good relationship with Coach Rhodes, Coach (Jamal) Brunt, and Coach (Jimmy) Martelli, and I trust them a lot.
I’m talking to one of them all the time. I also like how they play with their guards. They’re tough and they play real gritty, and they win basketball games."
Kayden Mingo will be joined by Mason Blackwood and Justin Houser next season at the Nittany Lions.
