Keelon Russell officially became a Crimson Tide player on January 8 with early enrollment. He shared his enthusiasm for Alabama’s basketball team by posting a story from its clash with Ole Miss on Tuesday, straight from the arena.
However, his support wasn’t enough to prevent a surprising 74-64 upset, as No. 21-ranked Ole Miss toppled No. 4-seeded Alabama. The win marked a historic achievement for coach Chris Beard, who celebrated the Rebels’ first-ever road victory over a top-five opponent.
Alabama’s typically dominant offense, which leads the nation, appeared drained after back-to-back road wins against South Carolina and No. 10-ranked Texas A&M. The Crimson Tide faced a relentless Ole Miss team, led by Malik Dia’s standout performance of 23 points and 19 rebounds.
Despite being an 80% favorite according to ESPN, Alabama struggled to overcome its turnover woes, matching the Rebels’ season average of 15.6 forced turnovers per game.
The Tide found themselves down by ten points late in the game, with Ole Miss guard Matthew Murrell’s 3-pointer extending the Rebels' lead to 56-46 with just nine minutes remaining.
Alabama sophomore Jarin Stevenson attempted to spark a comeback, cutting the deficit to six after a critical steal by Mark Sears and a thunderous dunk. However, the momentum faltered despite a timeout called by coach Nate Oats.
Keelon Russell kicks off NIL journey with Panini America
Keelon Russell, Alabama’s highly anticipated quarterback signee, announced on January 8 that he has signed an exclusive, multi-year trading card deal with Panini America.
This partnership marks his first NIL deal. Joining notable athletes like Jalen Milroe, Quinn Ewers, Arch Manning and Dylan Raiola, Russell is now part of Panini’s elite roster of college athletes.
“Being able to partner with a leader in the sports collectibles space like Panini is exciting," Russell said in the official release. "Seeing the quality of the products that Panini produces and all the things they have done for other NIL athletes I knew they were the right fit for me."
A legend at Texas powerhouse Duncanville High School, he finished his senior season with an impressive 4,177 passing yards, 55 touchdowns and just four interceptions, earning Gatorade National Football Player of the Year honors.
Ranked No. 2 among quarterbacks and No. 46 on On3 Sports' NIL valuation list, Keelon Russell is poised to rise as his profile grows.
