Eight-time Super Bowl winner Bill Belichick is making waves in both the NFL and collegiate football circles. On Dec. 11 of last year, Belichick signed a Proposal of Contract Terms and Conditions with UNC, officially becoming the Tar Heels' head coach. However, this proposal is not a binding agreement, and rumors about his unsigned long-form contract continue to circulate.
On Thursday, Belichick visited DeMatha Catholic High School, signaling his commitment to UNC. DeMatha shared this news on X.
"Coach Bill Belichick was on campus today. The former pro football coach is now the head coach at the University of North Carolina," the post read.
Moreover, Belichick is actively recruiting coaching staff and athletes for the University of South Carolina. He has already brought on his son, Stephen Belichick, as defensive coordinator, and Freddie Kitchens as offensive coordinator. The coaching roster also includes Matt Lombardi, Chris Jones, Billy Miller and Moses Cabrera. Currently, Belichick has his sights set on Cardinals Wide Receiver coach Garrick McGee.
Can Bill Belichick rejoin NFL?
The NFL's 2025 season has a number of head coaching vacancies, causing teams to scramble for the right mentor. Meanwhile, Bill Belichick, who has nearly 48 years of NFL coaching experience, signed a terms sheet with the University of North Carolina last month. However, this agreement contains a legal technicality.
The unsigned long-term contract includes a buyout clause stating that Belichick could terminate his tenure at UNC for $10 million before June 1, with the amount dropping to $1 million afterward. This clause, however, is missing from the term sheet signed on Dec. 11, 2024, creating a "legal grey area" for both parties.
In an interview with Fox News Digital, former player Rob Gronkowski discussed the likelihood of Belichick returning to the NFL:
"I think if Bill has success, he's gonna eventually hand that program off to his son, whose son is just developing to be a future head coach... So I believe that Coach Belichick will have some good success at UNC, but I believe that his heart truly belongs in the NFL ranks, and he's eventually gonna go back to the NFL if it's in three years or four years. But I think he ends his career coaching as a head coach for an NFL team," Rob stated.
Meanwhile, Tar Heels General Manager Mike Lombardi has consistently dismissed rumors about Belichick leaving for the NFL.
