Colorado Buffaloes two-way star Travis Hunter has won one of the most prestigious awards in football, the Heisman Trophy and his high school alma mater made sure to celebrate it. The school held a watch party for the announcement on Saturday, with faculty, students, staff, his former coaches and teammates and more coming to watch.
Several faculty members were seen doing the "Heisman" pose to celebrate their alumni's Heisman victory. Meanwhile, the school even provided some snacks and a performance from its marching band. When the announcement was about to be made, however, everyone's eyes were glued to the screen.
When it was finally announced that Travis Hunter won the 2024 Heisman Trophy, the audience inside the Collins Hill High School gym in Suwanee, Georgia, exploded in cheers, celebrating that one of their own won the most prestigious award in college football.
When he was still studying at Collins Hill, he had 85 receptions for 1,284 yards and 12 touchdowns on offense and 25 tackles, four interceptions and a forced fumble on defense during his senior year there. This was even though he missed five games due to an ankle injury.
He also helped lead Collins Hill to a 15-0 record during his senior year, which included winning the school's first state championship in football. Travis Hunter was also a consensus five-star recruit, regarded as the No. 1 overall for the Class of 2022, eventually committing to Deion Sanders and Jackson State. When Deion Sanders went to Colorado, he followed him there as well.
Collins Hill football coaches comment on Travis Hunter's Heisman win
During that watch party at Collins Hill High School, 11Alive was allowed to film what was happening. After the Heisman Trophy was awarded to Travis Hunter, the NBC affiliate then interviewed two of his high school football coaches. One of them was head coach Drew Swick.
"Feeling great about him. Not many great players are up for the Heisman and haven't won in a long time, and you look at what he does on both sides of the ball, he's incredibly the best player on the field and does it at a high level, offense and defense," he said. (5:47-6:01)
The coach added that those at Collins Hill were grateful for Travis Hunter because he put the school on the football map.
Hunter defeated Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel, Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty and Miami quarterback Cam Ward to win the coveted trophy with 2,231 points. It was a close contest, however, as second place Ashton Jeanty had 2,017 points.
