Santa Margarita High School's football team has been embroiled in a sexual assault controversy. As per a lawsuit filed in Orange County Superior Court, a 15-year-old sophomore player was sexually assaulted by his varsity teammates, as reported by The Orange County Register.
The incident occurred on September 24, per various court findings, when the sophomore "tried to enter the team’s locker room to get dressed for practice." However, what awaited him was a bunch of teenagers who pounced on him in the locker room.
"Waiting in the room a short distance from the football coaches’ offices were 15 to 18 varsity players standing in front of the lockers. All of them seemed to be staring at the sophomore," read the report published by Scott Reid.
The report further said that players allegedly took turns assaulting the 15-year-old kid, whose shouts for help were overshadowed by the loud banging of the lockers. A lawsuit was filed on Tuesday in Orange County Superior Court.
"This kind of stuff shouldn’t happen at any school. It shouldn’t happen in any locker room. It shouldn’t happen to any child," Brian Williams, a partner at Greenberg Gross and the person representing the 15-year-old sophomore player said. "The adults in charge of programs like this clearly need to do better."
According to Cheri Wood, the principal of Santa Margarita High School, "at least 8" other football players were alleged victims of the assault.
Santa Margarita set to take on the Servite Friars on Friday
The Santa Margarita Eagles (3-6) will take on the Servite Friars (6-3) on Friday, November 1. The Eagles are on a five-game losing streak, with their latest loss coming against the JSerra Catholic Lions. The Friars, on the other hand, are also experiencing a slump, as they have lost three in a row.
Servite failed to score a single point in their previous game against the Orange Lutheran Lancers, losing 38-0. They'll hope to put forth a better display on Friday against the Santa Margarita Eagles.
The Friars' running back, Quaid Carr, has had a phenomenal year. He has accumulated 1,055 yards and 11 touchdowns in nine games and will be a key player for Servite to win the game against the Eagles.
The Eagles will look at their quarterback, John Gazzaniga, to lead them to victory. He has thrown 1,307 yards, nine touchdowns and eight interceptions. However, he will have to play a huge role for the Eagles to secure a win at home.
