Colorado Buffaloes coach Deion Sanders, “Coach Prime,” has sent a message to youth coaches to make their work about their athletes and not about themselves. Sanders posted the message on X (formerly Twitter) on Dec. 28 as his team prepared to face BYU in the Alamo Bowl.
He wrote:
“To all the YOUTH coaches out there please know that YOU MATTER! You’re oftentimes the 1st Coach, Teacher, Mentor, Advisor & Substitute Parent these kids may have. Please OVERstand it ain’t about YOU! You’re on assignment for the LORD so stay focused & purposeful.”
Sanders and the Buffs are set to wrap up an incredible 2024 season tonight when they face the Cougars in the Alamo Bowl. He led the Buffs to a 9-3 regular-season finish, narrowly missing the Big 12 championship game. It is Sanders’ first winning season at Boulder after a 4-8 finish in his first season in charge.
Perhaps the biggest highlight for the program and Coach Prime this season is Travis Hunter’s Heisman Trophy triumph. The two-way star overcame all odds to win college football’s most prestigious award. Sanders himself had missed out on the award as a player for the Florida State Seminoles in 1988.
Hunter had an incredible season on both sides of play, making 92 receptions for 1,152 yards and 14 touchdowns as a wide receiver. In defense, he made 31 total tackles, 20 solo tackles, and 11 assisted tackles, as well as 11 passes defended.
He is set to make his last appearance for the Buffs in the Alamo Bowl along with Shedeur Sanders and other draft-bound players. These players will play in the bowl, protected by insurance policies to help them in case of an injury that might affect their draft prospects.
Has Coach Prime coached in high school?
Coach Prime has a wealth of experience coaching in high school before his foray into coaching college football. He worked as the head coach of the Prime Prep Academy before the school, which he co-founded, was shut down. He coached next at Triple A Academy for two seasons from 2015.
He coached his sons Deion Jr., Shilo, and Shedeur Sanders as the offensive coordinator of Trinity Christian High School in 2017. He was hired by Jackson State University in Sept. 2020, his first college coaching role.
Over the next three seasons, Coach Prime would make the Tigers a force to be reckoned with in college football. He left Jackson State in 2022 to take up the head coaching role at Colorado.
