Four-star safety Ivan Taylor, son of former NFL cornerback and two-time Super Bowl champion Ike Taylor, flipped his commitment from Notre Dame to Michigan on July 8. However, he is now being closely watched once again, as Kalen DeBoer's Alabama Crimson Tide's recruitment efforts appear to be gaining ground.
On Sunday. On3's Steve Wiltfong logged an expert prediction for Alabama to flip Taylor. The On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine gives the Crimson Tide a 55.5% chance of flipping the safety from the Sherrone Moore-coached Wolverines.
Taylor’s initial decision to commit to Michigan stemmed largely from how the Wolverines planned to utilize his skill set. Speaking with On3 following his commitment, he opened up about the discussion, saying:
"They said (I'd play) the free safety position. A lot of colleges have been saying nickel, and I think they're really the first ones to say free safety."
However, Taylor has been reportedly leaning toward Alabama for several weeks now. Last month, On3’s Chad Simmons indicated that Taylor was considering the Crimson Tide, although the discussion was less intense at that time. Now, Alabama's interest appears much stronger as it looks to finalize an elite 2025 recruiting class ahead of national signing day.
Alabama boasts the No. 1 recruiting class in the country and the Southeastern Conference, with 23 committed players. The class includes five five-star prospects and numerous four-star talents, but it lacks a committed safety.
The Crimson Tide’s 2025 safety recruitment has seen all other targeted safeties commit elsewhere, except for three-star Jaylen Mosley, who is predicted to lean toward Ole Miss. This leaves Alabama needing a safety talent like Taylor to complete its class.
What's next for Michigan following Ivan Taylor's potential flip?
If Ivan Taylor flips his commitment from Michigan to Alabama, it would mark the Wolverines’ second loss of a top-100 recruit in the 2025 cycle. This comes after Michigan previously lost defensive lineman Nate Marshall, who flipped to Auburn in August.
However, Michigan doesn’t have much to be worried about as the Wolverines flipped four-star cornerback Shamari Earls from the Georgia Bulldogs this month. Michigan has managed to secure a solid secondary with four-star safety Kainoa Winston and cornerback Jayden Sanders in the 2025 cycle.
Michigan's 2025 class ranks No. 10 in the nation with 19 committed players.
