In a significant victory for LSU head coach Brian Kelly, standout tight end prospect Mike Tyler from Columbia, South Carolina, has committed to play for the Tigers. Standing at 6'5" and weighing 235 pounds, Tyler is regarded as one of the premier tight ends in the 2024 recruiting class.
After narrowing his options to LSU and Duke, Tyler opted to join the Tigers, drawn by the school’s strong football tradition and the chance to compete in the Southeastern Conference (SEC).
"LSU has always been synonymous with national championships," Tyler told On3. "They’ve built an incredible recruiting class, and I’m eager to join such a storied program with top-tier coaches and players."
Tyler’s recruitment journey with LSU began later than with other schools. Despite LSU’s limited recruiting presence in South Carolina, the Tigers identified Tyler as a key target during the spring.
“LSU initially seemed too far from home,” Tyler admitted. “But once I stepped on campus, I knew it was where I wanted to be. The people at LSU made it feel like home, and that made all the difference.”
The decision, made shortly after his official visit, was kept under wraps until Tyler’s birthday. He credited his strong relationship with LSU’s coaching staff.
"Coach Kelly saw how well I fit with the team, and we connected on a personal level," Tyler noted. "Coach Nagle sees a lot of potential in me and made me feel confident in my decision."
Mike Tyler chooses LSU over Duke, solidifies commitment to Tigers' championship aspirations
Mike Tyler initially leaned toward the Blue Devils but ultimately chose the Tigers, attracted by their coaching staff and ability to prepare him for the NFL.
"The relationships with the position coach, the offense, and who could best develop me for the NFL were key factors," Tyler shared. "LSU just felt right—it's real southern hospitality down there."
Mike Tyler made a lasting impression at LSU's summer camp, prompting tight ends coach Slade Nagle and offensive coordinator Joe Sloan to intensify their recruitment efforts. Tyler felt a strong connection to the program and community after an official visit in June and returning for the Bayou Splash event in July.
"The Bayou Splash was incredible," Tyler recalled. "The people at LSU are welcoming, and the southern hospitality is real. I felt like I belonged."
Mike Tyler's commitment adds to LSU’s 2025 recruiting class, joining fellow 4-star tight end JD LaFleur. With Mason Taylor entering his junior season as one of the SEC’s top tight ends, LSU’s depth at the position is strong, including promising talents like Ka’Morreun Pimpton and Trey’Dez Green.
