ESPN analyst Marcus Spears may be better known for his football career with the Dallas Cowboys as a defensive end, but his son, Marcus Spears Jr., is making a name for himself in another sport, basketball. The high school sophomore was named to the ESPN 25, ranking as the No. 3 player in the Class of 2027.
On Thursday, Spears posted about his son's achievement on X:
"Proud of you @Mspearsjr but you know like I always tell you. The work will show regardless! I know you’re working to be your best and that’s why I will celebrate you as loud as I will get on you!!! Prouda You SUN."
Spears Jr. plays for Dynamic Prep in Irving, Texas, together with four-star SMU commits Jermaine O'Neal Jr. and Jaden Toombs, as well as fellow top 2027 prospect Ryan Hampton, who is ranked No. 6 in the ESPN 25.
So far, Spears Jr. and Dynamic Prep are off to an 8-2 start, with big wins over highly ranked teams like Liberty Magnet High School and Link Academy, but have lost to Allen and William J. Brennan. William J. Brennan is led by five-star Houston commit Kingston Flemings, while Allen is considered one of the top high school basketball programs in the country.
Marcus Spears Jr. talked about early offers from Texas and LSU
While his football star of a dad is expressing his pride, Marcus Spears Jr. is already attracting the attention of several college programs. He has offers from Texas and LSU. The small forward spoke to On3 regarding these early offers in August:
“LSU is a great place. My parents went there. They have a new coaching staff there and they have great facilities. I like Louisiana, for real. There is nothing really like Baton Rouge to me. They have a great campus and a good coach.
“Texas probably has the nicest college facility to me. I like Coach Rodney (Terry), he’s a new coach and is building the program. I’m going to watch them this year to see how they do. Texas has a great campus, and my sister is going there. So for both of us to be there together, that would be big."
He also confirmed that other schools, such as SMU, TCU and Tennessee have shown interest in him.
