Keelon Russell threw six touchdown passes—four in the first half—as No. 4 Duncanville overpowered No. 17 DeSoto 42-20 on Friday in a game with national implications. Russell, an Alabama commit, connected with fellow five-star and Oregon commit Dakorien Moore on four first-half scoring strikes.
Russell completed 27 of 36 passes for 427 yards, while Moore racked up nine receptions for 231 yards and four touchdowns. The duo’s standout performance began with a 66-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter and continued with strikes of 19, 38 and 44 yards in the first half.
Fans reacted to the game on Instagram.
"Them boys the truth!" A fan wrote.
"They playing backyard football at this point," another fan wrote.
Here are some other fan reactions:
Despite the passing-heavy offense, which amassed 475 yards through the air and only 29 on the ground, Duncanville executed its game plan successfully.
“This is a dog fight,” Duncanville coach Reginald Samples said. “We’ve got a great group of receivers. We just do what we have to do to win. Sometimes we run good. Sometimes we don’t run so good.”
DeSoto gained momentum in the second half, closing the gap and threatening to make it a one-score game in the fourth quarter. However, a high snap to DeSoto quarterback Kelden Ryan derailed a key red zone opportunity, and Duncanville's Jaylyn Manning intercepted Ryan shortly after to seal the victory.
Keelon Russell credited the team’s chemistry for the win.
“The offense has been grinding since the summer,” Russell said. “We’ve been building relationships and chemistry, especially with ... Dakorien Moore. It’s electric. The duo is electric. The offense is electric.”
Keelon Russell and Moore dominate as Duncanville extends its winning streak over DeSoto
Alabama commit Keelon Russell easily avoided pressure while DeSoto’s defense struggled to contain Moore, who routinely beat the secondary.
DeSoto, which averaged 57.6 points per game before the matchup, found some offensive life in the second half but relied heavily on a rushing attack that couldn’t cut into Duncanville's lead.
After Russell's fifth touchdown—a 44-yard screen pass to Devine Green for a 35-6 lead—Deondrae Riden Jr. finally scored for DeSoto early in the fourth quarter, narrowing the gap to 35-20.
A late interception by Jaylyn Manning shut down DeSoto’s comeback hopes, and Russell capped off his night with a 13-yard touchdown pass to Trenton Yancey, his sixth of the game.
The rivalry has been a series of streaks, with DeSoto winning six consecutive matchups from 2009 to 2016 before Duncanville responded with five straight, including Friday’s win. Both teams are perennial powers, combining for six state titles and sending 32 players to the NFL.
Through five games this season, Russell has thrown 25 touchdowns, earning him a spot as the nation’s No. 13 overall prospect for the 2025 recruiting class, according to the On3 Industry Ranking.
Moore, the top-ranked wide receiver in the country, is No. 4 overall. Duncanville, now 5-0, holds the top spot in Texas. DeSoto, ranked No. 6, drops to 4-2.
