Four-star quarterback Peyton Houston continues making headlines in his sophomore season. Despite his team, Evangel Christian Academy (Louisiana), falling short in a thrilling 77-76 loss to Captain Shreve (Louisiana) on Thursday night, Houston captured the attention of the entire football community with his record-breaking performance.
Houston threw for an incredible 817 yards and eight touchdowns, while also rushing for 87 yards and two more scores. Initially, it was reported that he had totaled 868 yards of offense, but after a review of his game tape by the Shreveport-Bossier City Advocate, the official tally was set at 817 yards.
This incredible performance places Houston just 20 yards short of the national record for most passing yards in a single game, which is held by Will Grier. Grier threw for 837 yards in 2012 while playing for Davidson Day High School in North Carolina, per MaxPreps.
Despite missing out on the national record by a narrow margin, the 6-foot, 195-pound quarterback now holds the Louisiana state record for passing yards in a game. His 817 yards surpassed the previous record of 639 yards, set by T.J. Finley in 2018, per MaxPreps. He also completed 53 of 68 passes during the game, ranking ninth all-time in national high school history and first in Louisiana.
However, Houston remains humble in the face of such achievements. Speaking to the Shreveport-Bossier Advocate, he said:
"It's pretty cool. I want to give God all the glory. My teammates did a great job – my line blocked well, and the receivers got open."
Houston's connection with his wide receiver Johnny Casey proved to be particularly effective, with five of his touchdown passes going to Casey. The game marked Houston's fifth consecutive outing with over 300 passing yards, bringing his season totals to 2,598 passing yards and 22 touchdowns in just six games.
Peyton Houston opens up about narrow loss to Captain Shreve
In Evangel Christian Academy's 77-76 loss to Captain Shreve on Thursday, the school held a 14-point lead three times, including a 56-42 advantage late in the third quarter. However, Captain Shreve mounted a comeback in a game that turned into a high-scoring shootout, breaking the area's previous record of 149 combined points set by Benton and Haughton in 2022.
Peyton Houston expressed his disappointment with such a narrow loss but maintained his faith.
"It's a blessing. Unfortunately we weren't able to come out on top," Houston told the Shreveport-Bossier Advocate. "Like I said in the previous (close losses), God said no today. We have to continue to put the work in and give God all the glory."
Evangel, now 1-5 on the season, will face Benton on Oct. 18.
