Caitlin Clark may have grown in prominence during her college days with Iowa, but the Indiana Fever star was also a celebrated player in high school. She was ranked No. 4 overall in the Class of 2020 and was rated a five-star recruit. A new mixtape of her high school days, posted by "Courtside Films" on Thursday, shows why she was already highly rated during that time.
The video showed Clark playing various games for Dowling Catholic High School in West Des Moines, Iowa. She made an impact the moment she arrived at the school averaging 16.0 points, 4.9 assists and 2.3 steals per game during her freshman year. Even though it was still her first year there, she was already a star player and led her school to a 19–5 record.
She became better during her sophomore year, averaging 28.3 ppg, 6.8 rpg, 4.2 apg and 2.5 spg, with Dowling ending the year with a 20-4 record. She continued to improve during her third year of high school, leading the state of Iowa in scoring as a junior as she averaged 34.0 ppg, 7.3 rpg, 3.7 apg and 2.3 spg.
In her senior year, Clark averaged 33.7 ppg, leading the state of Iowa in scoring again. Dowling was the favorite to win the Class 5A regional championship, but was upset by Sioux City East High School. She was also named Iowa Miss Basketball and played in both the McDonald's All-American Game and the Jordan Brand Classic.
She received several college offers during high school, including Notre Dame and Iowa State. However, she chose Iowa in the end and there, she became a household name and changed women's basketball.
Caitlin Clark talks about her relationship with rival Angel Reese
Because of her stellar years in college and in the WNBA, as well as making women's sports even more popular, Caitlin Clark was named TIME's Athlete of the Year on Tuesday. She sat down for an interview with the magazine, and she was asked about her rivalry with Chicago Sky power forward Angel Reese.
“I don’t get that at all,” she said regarding the rivalry. “We’re not best friends, by any means, but we’re very respectful of one another. Yes, we’ve had tremendous battles, but when have I ever guarded her? And when has she guarded me?”
Caitlin Clark and Reese were top collegiate stars in recent years. Reese's LSU beat Caitlin Clark and Iowa for the 2023 NCAA national championship and Clark and Iowa returned the favor in the 2024 Elite Eight.
Then, with the pair in the WNBA, Clark won Rookie of the Year honors ahead of Reese.
