Mater Dei has St. John Bosco's number this season, not just in football but also in basketball, as the Monarchs successfully defended their home court on Friday in a Trinity League game against their rivals. Four-star small forward Elzie Harrington led St. John Bosco with 26 points, but his efforts were not enough in the clash between California Catholic school giants.

The game went down the wire, but Mater Dei survived with a three-point win 62-59. Dominic Perfetti added nine points for the Braves.

Mater Dei four-star shooting guard Luke Barnett knocked down a crucial free throw down the stretch to help his team hang on.

Harrington, the No. 56 overall prospect from the Class of 2025, kept the Braves afloat with 14 points in the third quarter. St. John Bosco led 42-41 at the start of the fourth quarter, but Mater Dei rallied thanks to a clutch 3-pointer by DeMarcus Henry that came from a crucial steal from Barnett.

The Monarchs had also defeated St. John Bosco on the football field, 59-14 on Oct. 26 and 31-24 on Nov. 30.

Elzie Harrington flipped from Harvard to commit to USC

Elzie Harrington surprised fans last month when he flipped his verbal commitment to Harvard and decided to stay in California and play for USC. He had been committed to Harvard since June.

He spoke with On3's Joe Tipton in December about his decision and said that the big reason was Trojans coach Eric Musselman, who has a reputation for developing big guards who can also play small forward.

“Musselman is great at coaching and developing big guards,” Harrington said. “I think he’ll challenge and get the best out of me every day and that’s something that is really important.”

Harrington is also the No. 13 shooting guard in his class, according to On3. With him going to USC, Musselman will get a prolific scorer who knows how to use his size against smaller guards and is versatile enough to thrive in small-ball lineups and play as a small forward.
