Xavion Staton, the 6-foot-10 center from Las Vegas, is turning heads with his impressive dribbling and ball-handling skills. While his commitment to the Cougars in November didn't garner as much attention as his future teammate AJ Dybantsa, Xavion nonetheless is a powerful addition to coach Kevin Young's squad.
Donavon Webster of Baller House Visuals posted a video of Xavion showcasing his exceptional skill sets on the court on Monday. The 18-year-old was seen stealing the ball near his basket, slicing through defenders with a swift crossover, and finishing at the rim. The coast-to-coast play highlights his defense, speed and scoring ability.
Here's the video:
Xavion is a 4-star recruit in the class of 2025. The Sierra Vista High School standout is a No. 22 nationally ranked player, according to 247 sports and No. 1 in Las Vegas, NV. Besides, he's No. 29 in national ranking per On3 as well.
Xavion Staton was the second commit for BYU this year after 4-star power forward Chamberlain Burgess, who committed to the Cougars in October. The youngster had over 32 offers per 247Sports but ultimately picked BYU over UNLV and Stanford.
“He is a highly talented and high-upside big man who is one of the best rim protectors in the country,” wrote 247 Sports lead basketball analyst Travis Branham.
Like Dybantsa, did Xavion Staton also commit to BYU for coach Young’s NBA ties?
One of the major reasons for AJ Dybantsa to go with the Cougars was the possibility of accelerating his NBA entry.
Coach Kavin Young has deep ties with the NBA and could facilitate Dybantsa's ascent to the league. But was it also the reason behind Xavion Staton’s commitment to BYU? To some extent, yes.
“The overall fit is it for me, with its proximity to home and NBA development. Being able to be around an NBA ‘program’ with their staff is important to me," Xavion shared with On3.
However, he also views the chance to grow as a player under Young's leadership at BYU as a significant factor in his decision.
“It’s a place where I can enjoy living without having to worry about distractions, so I’m able to focus on getting better and have fun doing so,” Staton further shared.
Nevertheless, his addition to BYU’s roster transforms the program into a heavyweight. Paired with elite talent like AJ Dybantsa and Isaac Burgess, Staton will form a dynamic trio capable of dominating both ends of the floor.
