On Wednesday, the nation was rocked by another tragic incident of gun violence when a 14-year-old gunman claimed the lives of four people at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia. Among the victims were Richard Aspinwall, 39, a beloved math teacher and defensive coordinator for the school's football team, and students Christian Angulo and Mason Schermerhorn, along with math teacher Cristina Irimie.

Buford High School decided to honor the victims during its Friday night football game against Roswell. Buford coach Brandon Gill announced that the team will wear Kelly Green helmets adorned with the Apalachee High School logo.

In a 13-second video posted on X, Gill expressed his support for the Apalachee community, writing:

"Wolves reppin’ the Apalachee ‘A’ tonight on the Kelly Green helmets! Grateful to be at a place that cares about FAMILY regardless of your colors… Tonight is for YOU @CoachAwall."

Buford High School went on to win the game 52-17, marking its second victory of the season following a close 29-28 win over Benedictine on Aug. 23. The team had opened the season with a 13-10 loss to Milton on Aug. 16 and now stands at 2-1 as it heads into Week 3.

The Wolves had an incredible 11-2 record in 2023 before Grayson eliminated them from the state playoffs. The school will face Douglas County on Sept. 13.

According to On3, several other Georgia schools are also planning to honor the victims of the tragedy during their upcoming games.

Apalachee High School shooting tragedy update

The 14-year-old shooter, Colt Gray, and his father, Colin Gray, appeared in court on Friday. Colt faces charges of four counts of felony murder. Judge Currie Mingledorff informed him that due to his age, the maximum sentence he might receive is life imprisonment, with or without parole.

Colin has been charged with four counts of involuntary manslaughter and two counts of second-degree murder, along with eight counts of cruelty to children. Allegations suggest that he provided his son with a firearm while knowing he posed a threat to himself and others. If convicted, Colin would face a maximum penalty of 180 years in prison.

Besides the murder of four people, the incident left nine others injured, including eight students and one teacher. According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, all nine surviving victims are expected to make a full recovery.

Apalachee High School will remain closed on Tuesday, while other schools in Barrow County will resume classes.
