AJ Dybantsa, the nation's top basketball prospect, received a warm welcome at BYU during his first visit after announcing his commitment to the Cougars. Dybantsa was at the Marriott Center on Wednesday during the game between BYU and Fresno State.
SportsCenter NEXT posted the highlights of the Red Bull athlete's visit to BYU on its Instagram handle on Thursday, showcasing the wild enthusiasm of the BYU fans as Dybantsa walked around the stadium. Alongside his father, Dybantsa sat in the front row just behind the BYU bench. He was introduced to the cheering crowd at halftime.
First, the Marriott Center played a video of the star player on the big screen. Next, Dybantsa walked across what will be his court for the college duration as the audience gave him a standing ovation. BYU's solid performance further amplified the lively atmosphere as the Cougars registered a 95-67 victory over Fresno State, proving it to be a memorable visit for AJ Dybantsa.
The star small forward picked BYU over North Carolina, Alabama and Kansas and announced his commitment during Tuesday's episode of ESPN's "First Take.”
It was a real shocker for fans and analysts alike since many were betting on North Carolina as his ultimate pick. However, On3 gave BYU the highest chance (69.2%) amongst the Utah Prep star's final four options. Renowned basketball analyst Jeff Goodman called AJ Dybantsa’s commitment an “absolutely mammoth, a mammoth day for BYU basketball.”
How will AJ Dybantsa’s addition impact the Cougars?
Dybantsa is the highest-rated recruit BYU has ever signed. His scoring abilities are sure to give a major boost to coach Kevin Young’s roster. However, the primary motivator for Dybantsa to join BYU is the possibility of a quick NBA draft. Coach Young has NBA connections (he was an assistant and associate head coach with the 76ers and Suns); likewise, his staff members have also worked with NBA teams.
Dybantsa himself has acknowledged this:
"Coach Young's NBA background played a big factor in my decision," he told ESPN. "He came from the NBA. He coached NBA players. You cannot get any closer to where I want to be.”
Besides, BYU will allow AJ Dybantsa to hone his game further. He will be a part of an experienced roster that includes forward Richie Saunders, Keba Keita and guard Dallin Hall. According to 247Sports’ Adam Finklestein, this will put off some pressure from the ace player and give him space to fit in and evolve with the Cougars.
"Ideally, he will be surrounded by enough shooting to space the floor, experienced decision-makers so that he doesn't have the burden of being a primary ball-handler, and two lob threats at the rim in Keita and Staton.”
With Dybantsa all set to join coach Young's squad at BYU, fans eagerly wait to see how his college career unfolds.
