Kansas City Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes and Chris Jones attended the Blue Valley vs. Blue Valley West high school football game in Kansas on Friday. It was a thrilling battle between both teams.
Blue Valley was ready to seal a dramatic victory with just 44 seconds on the clock, but Blue Valley West quarterback Tate Nagy had other plans. Nagy orchestrated an 80-yard drive, resulting in a game-winning touchdown that flipped the script and led to a 42-35 victory for the Jaguars.
Despite falling behind 14-0 early, the Jaguars remained calm and fought back to tie the game by the end of the first quarter. Blue Valley West coach Josh Koerkenmeier praised his team’s resilience in the postgame conference.
“Unfortunately, we started the Week 1 game against Aquinas the exact same way,” Koerkenmeier said. “We were able to kind of come back there, so that was a good lesson for our kids to just keep believing when bad things happen. Football games ebb and flow like that and we have a pretty mature group with a lot of seniors."
Nagy played a crucial role in the Jaguars’ comeback. He threw four touchdown passes while completing 18 of 23 for 285 yards and adding 55 yards on the ground.
For Blue Valley Northwest, running back LJ Bowens impressed with 150 rushing yards, including a 52-yard touchdown to kick off the game. The Huskies jumped out to an early 14-point lead, with quarterback Nathan Baxter scoring a rushing touchdown soon after.
Patrick Mahomes confident in Chiefs’ receivers despite trade activity
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes expressed strong confidence in his current receiving group, despite major wide receiver trades occurring across the league. Davante Adams and Amari Cooper were traded this week, but neither landed with the Chiefs.
"I have extreme confidence with the guys that are on that football field,'' Mahomes told ESPN. "They've won games, they've won Super Bowls, they've made plays in big moments and Brett Veach has done a great job of bringing players in that can step up whenever their number is called.
Though Kansas City may still pursue a receiver before the upcoming trade deadline, they recently lost wideouts Rashee Rice and Hollywood Brown to injury. The Chiefs' top three receivers are Xavier Worthy, JuJu Smith-Schuster and Justin Watson.
Smith-Schuster grabbed seven passes for 130 yards in their latest game against the New Orleans Saints, while Watson has six catches for 87 yards this season.
Looking ahead to Sunday's matchup against the 49ers, Mahomes highlighted its importance, referring to it as "as big as a regular-season game can get," given their recent Super Bowl history.
"Whenever you have two great football teams that meet up in the Super Bowl and meet up in all these big games, there's going to be a history between that and so obviously we've been able to win those games,'' Mahomes said.
Mahomes has completed 111 of 160 passes for 1,235 yards this season, with six touchdowns and six interceptions. He achieved a passer rating of 88.9 and averaged 7.7 yards per attempt over five games.
