When Rutgers freshman Dylan Harper, son of former NBA champion Ron Harper, was in high school, there was a reason he was a five-star recruit and the No. 3 ranked player. Before joining the Scarlet Knights, he was the cornerstone for New Jersey's Don Bosco Prep. This is seen in Thursday's video from Courtside Films, which shows him overpowering defenders.
In his senior year, Dylan Harper led the Don Bosco Prep Ironmen to the Non-Public A state tournament championship, ending the season 29-3. He averaged 22.4 points, 5.7 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.4 steals per contest, and was selected to play in the McDonald’s All-American Game. He was also named Gatorade Player of the Year.
As shown in the video, he is an offensive threat in multiple areas of the court as he can score in the paint and hit deep threes. He also has a decent mid-range shot and is a strong defender.
Adam Finkelstein, the director of scouting for 247Sports, noted that Harper is an outstanding rebounder on the perimeter, as the 6-foot-6 combo guard has the size, length and strength to guard many at his position. He was also described as a productive and effective player who is "versatile in different types of roles."
Dylan Harper and fellow freshman Ace Bailey nearly matched Penn State's total rebounds
In college, Harper has formed a dynamic duo with fellow five-star recruit Ace Bailey at Rutgers. This team-up has proven effective, as the two freshmen dominated the boards against Penn State on Wednesday in a much-needed 80-76 win, after a three-game losing streak.
This was Rutgers' first Big Ten win of the season, with Bailey and Harper making up for the team's recent rebounding woes. The duo recorded a total of 27 rebounds, with Harper having 12 and Bailey grabbing 15. This was just five short of the Penn State team, which grabbed 32 boards altogether, compared to Rutgers' 46.
Dylan Harper led the Scarlet Knights' offense against Penn State, with a game-high 24 points, which meant he had a double-double with 12 rebounds. He shot 8-for-14 from the floor and was forcing Penn State to double-team him. Meanwhile, Ace Bailey also had a double-double with 15 points to add to his 15 rebounds.
