BYU signee and No. 30 recruit in the Class of 2025 Xavion Staton switched from Sierra Vista High School to Utah Prep on Monday to continue the season alongside another BYU player and No. 1 recruit in the Class of 2025 AJ Dybantsa. Staton also joined Washington signee and four-star recruit J.J. Mandaquit, who also plays at Utah Prep.

The trio of Dybantsa, Mandaquit and Staton played together in Utah Prep's 78-73 win against Patrick School. Mandaquit took to Instagram to reshare a story by Christopher Patire showing Staton finishing off an alley-oop, which was later reshared by Staton.

"We turnin up this year 🤞🏽 @jj.mandaquit," Staton captioned his story.

While Staton's and Mandaquit's stats are unknown, Dybantsa finished the game with 31 points.

Staton, a 7-foot-0 center, was awarded the Gatorade 2023-24 Player of the Year Boys Basketball - Nevada after averaging a double double with 13.8 points, 14.0 rebounds and three blocks per game, leading his school to the Class 4A state championship and was also selected in the First Team All-Desert League.

BYU coach Kevin Young commended Staton's skills and defensive abilities.

“Xavion, I think offensively, he’ll fit in really well with the amount of vertical threats that we like to have out there. He’s a guy who’s getting more skilled as he progresses in his high school career,” Young said on Staton after he signed in November. “Then defensively, he’s the best rim protector in the high school ranks in the entire country.”

Xavion Staton shares reason why he signed with BYU

The Las Vegas native ranks second in his position and third in Utah. He had offers from top programs including UNLV, Stanford, Michigan and Kansas.

He took visits to Michigan on Sep. 21, Stanford on Oct. 4, UNLV on Oct. 26 and BYU on Nov. 2 before he committed to the Cougars on Nov. 4. As a junior at Sierra Vista, Xavion Staton averaged 7.2 points, 7.6 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game, before the holiday break.

“The overall fit is it for me, with its proximity to home and NBA development,” Staton said via On3. “Being able to be around an NBA ‘program’ with their staff is important to me. It’s a place where I can enjoy living without having to worry about distractions so I’m able to focus on getting better and have fun doing so.”

AJ Dybantsa, Xavion Staton and Chamberlain Burgress are all part of the Cougars' strong 2025 class.
