New York Liberty star Sabrina Ionescu is tearing it up at the WNBA finals, with her team leading the Minnesota Lynx 2-1. She is currently regarded as one of the deadliest 3-point shooters in women's basketball, almost beating Steph Curry in a 3-point contest during the NBA All-Star Weekend last February 2024.

Her basketball career has had plenty of highlights, including during her time at Miramonte High School in Orinda, California.

Under the guidance of Miramonte head coach Kelly Sopak, Ionescu has shown that she has been a great player since her freshman year, averaging 13.8 points, 3.9 assists, and 3.9 steals per game. She improved as her high school basketball career continued, eventually leading Miramonte to the CIF open division title game during her senior year with an average of 25.3 points, 8.8 assists, 7.6 rebounds, 4.5 steals, and 1.3 blocks per game.

Sabrina Ionescu had a legendary performance during that division title game with a triple-double of 24 points, 10 assists, and 10 rebounds. Despite this, she and Miramonte fell to Chaminade.

As a student athlete in high school, Sabrina Ionescu has had plenty of accolades, including becoming the USA Today Girls Basketball Player of the Year, Max Preps Player of the Year, Cal-Hi Sports Ms. Basketball State Player of the Year, and Gatorade State Player of the Year. She was also a McDonald's All-American and was also selected as a Jordan Brand All-American.

The Liberty star also won MVP honors during the McDonald's All-America game after she broke the scoring record with 25 points, seven of which were three-pointers.

Because of her prowess, she was one of the most sought-after high school players, being the No. 4 overall player from the Class of 2016, as well as the No. 1 ranked point guard. She eventually went to the Oregon Ducks, becoming the school's highest-ranked recruit at that time.

Sabrina Ionescu talks about her time at Miramonte

As Sabrina Ionescu continued her rise in the WNBA, she sat down for an interview with her high school's publication last March and talked about her time at Miramonte, with the school saying that its most famous alumni is none other than Ionescu. She noted that her high school coach, Kelly Sopak, had a big impact on her career.

"Miramonte definitely played a big part in my development," she said (via Gomats.org). "From day one I was coached and held to a high standard of accountability by coach (Kelly) Sopak. We were fortunate enough to play in some of the most competitive events while at Miramonte, traveling to places like Arizona and Hawaii to play the best competition possible."

She also revealed during the interview that she talked to Curry after the WNBA 3-point contest and they began the conversation of facing off against each other. She met him even before her WNBA days, while she was still playing for Oregon.
