Eric Kresser stepped down as coach of the Benjamin Buccaneers football program in December. He had been a household name in college and professional football having played quarterback for the NFL and the CFL for five seasons during the 1990s and early 2000s. But he had found success as the head coach of the Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, program for the past seven seasons.
However, there have been no explanations given for his abrupt resignation.
Under Kresser, the Buccaneers went 45-28, with multiple seasons with at least eight victories and five regional semifinal appearances, including a run to the regional finals in 2021.
Kresser also had a hand in growing talents like Jordan Travis, Amaree Williams and Kaiir Elam progressing toward collegiate and professional careers in football.
Potential factors behind Eric Kresser's resignation
#1, Desire for a new challenge:
With a great track record, Eric Kresser may be on the lookout for a new opportunity within which to exercise his skills in a different setting. His history as an NFL and CFL player and as a collegiate star at Florida and Marshall could also have provided some openings for roles at higher levels in coaching or positions in administration in the sport.
#2, Personal reasons
Like most coaches, Kresser may have chosen to vacate his position in order to attend to more important personal matters. Coaching a high school football team requires great effort and heavy investment which can drive a wedge in family and personal life.
#3, Program challenges
Running a high school football program has its complications. Budget cuts, expectations from parents and community and the pressure of player development are just some such complications that would influence his decision.
#4, Focus on player development
Kresser could also want to pursue his interest in developing individual players. Part of his contributions at Benjamin was assisting athletes to realize their potential and take their skills to high-end college programs and even the NFL. This could be something that Kresser might want to focus on.
What’s Next for the Buccaneers?
Benjamin High School is in the process of finding a successor to Eric Kresser, whose task will be to build on the strong foundation that Kresser left behind. His replacement will have big shoes to fill but will also inherit a successful program blessed with a reputation and tradition for producing elite talent.
As for Eric Kresser, the next step in his career is uncertain as well. Whether going into a new coaching role, personal endeavors or other football opportunities elsewhere, he will likely be remembered for his contributions to the Benjamin Buccaneers.
