The Tennessee Volunteers are continuously working to build a competitive team under the leadership of head coach Josh Heupel. They appear to have wrapped up their 2024 recruiting class with early commitments from top players like defensive back Kaleb Beasley and defensive lineman Carson Gentle.
However, there is still room for additional talents as Heupel and his staff remain focused on potential recruits who can strengthen the roster. Let's see which three high school prospects they can target to bolster the 2024 class.
3 high school prospects for Tennessee football
#1. Timajay Hayes
Melbourne, Florida's linebacker Timajay Hayes is listed as a three-star athlete by On3. He has yet to be rated by 247Sports, but he has already gained attention from major programs. He has received offers from notable schools, including Auburn, Georgia Tech, NC State, and the Tennessee Volunteers.
As a sophomore in 2021, the linebacker recorded 29 tackles, nine quarterback hurries, three fumble recoveries, two forced fumbles, and one sack while playing for Melbourne Eau Gallie. His performance was notable in competing in Florida’s 6A classification and he also started on the varsity team as a freshman.
#2. Herb Gray
Herb Gray is a defensive lineman from Upper Marlboro, Maryland. He attended a junior day at Tennessee on January 14 last year and was impressed by the program.
“Their facilities are top-notch," Gray said via On3. "They can compete with the top facilities in the country. The weight room and player’s lounge area were amazing and I really liked the stadium. I didn’t get a chance to see the campus that much this time around, but overall I really liked it in Happy Valley.”
The Vols offered Gray on December 15, 2022, and his potential definitely makes him a top prospect for the team's defensive line.
#3. Kumaro Brown
Kumaro Brown is a Tennessee native who plays cornerback. He was shot in the leg during a drive-by shooting in his neighborhood on July 4, but he took part in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl All-Star game and had a strong finish to the 2023 season.
Playing for MASE, Brown accumulated 1,010 all-purpose yards and 18 offensive touchdowns, along with three punt returns for touchdowns. His performance helped MASE advance to the second round of the TSSAA 1A football playoffs.
Brown said the Vols backed away from recruiting him, and he even didn’t know the reason behind that, but Tennessee could target him after seeing his recent performance.
