The 2023-24 high school basketball season saw some of the best teams compete against each other. There were a lot of teams that had a great season as their players left lasting impressions on scouts from colleges across the nation.
As the 2024-25 high school season approaches, many athletes will look to contribute and lead their respective teams to glory. Montverde Academy remains a force to be reckoned with in high school basketball as they finished their previous campaign with an unbeaten record.
Let's look at the top 10 high school basketball teams entering the 2024 season.
Top 10 high school basketball teams
#10 Don Bosco Prep (New Jersey)
Don Bosco Prep had a terrific regular season as they finished their campaign with a record of 29-3. However, its postseason run came to an early end in The Throne tournament.
The New Jersey-based high school defeated some of the best teams including Columbus, IMG Academy, McEachern, St. Peter’s Prep, and Paul VI en route to winning the New Jersey Non-Public A championship.
Dylan Harper, their best player and a Rutgers five-star recruit, showcased his immense talent by winning the Gatorade New Jersey Boys Basketball Player of the Year award. He averaged 22.4 points, 5.7 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.4 steals per game throughout the campaign.
#9 Dynamic Prep (Texas)
Dynamic Prep had a tough schedule last year but still managed to eke out 23 wins out of 24 total games. Such was their dominance that 13 of those victories came against teams with 20+ wins.
The Texas-based school will enter this year with the same confidence and expectations around them. Four-star juniors Jermaine O’Neal Jr., Jaden Toombs, and three-star senior Leon Horner were all instrumental in Dynamic Prep's success.
#8 Roosevelt (California)
Despite an up-and-down season, Roosevelt High School proved its worth by defeating Columbus to win The Throne tournament last year, with some of the best high school basketball players on their roster.
Five-star recruit Brayden Burries had an impressive season, averaging 24.8 points, 7.9 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 2.7 steals. He was named The Throne MVP as he dropped 34 points and 10 rebounds in the semifinal and hit the game-winner in the finals.
#7 Stony Point (Texas)
Stony Point had a fantastic season last year. They finished the campaign with a record of 38-2. Plano East was the only team that stood between Stony Point and a perfect season.
Four-star power forward Josiah Moseley won the Gatorade Texas Boys Basketball Player of the Year award and was named back-to-back Central Texas Player of the Year, with averages of 22.8 points, 8.9 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.8 blocks.
#6 Grayson (Georgia)
Grayson ended their 2023-24 campaign on a 15-0 streak which gave them a record of 30-2. Grayson outscored opponents by 19 points per game, beating some of the best teams in the country.
Gicarri Harris and Jacob Wilkins were named to the Class 7A All-State First Team by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Amir Taylor to the second team, and Anthony Alston to the honorable mention list.
#5 Harvard-Westlake (California)
Harvard-Westlake's record of 33-3 last season was a staggering display of consistency, despite going through one of the toughest schedules in the high school basketball season. Their strength of schedule was an extremely high 31.9.
Trent Perry won the Gatorade California Boys Basketball Player of the Year. He scored 42 points in the quarterfinals and averaged 18.7 points, 6.2 rebounds, 6.0 assists, and 1.8 steals per game while shooting 47.2% from 3-point range.
#4 St. Paul VI (Virginia)
St. Paul VI won its matchups against some of the best high school basketball teams in the nation last year such as Myers Park, Sidwell Friends, Link Academy, McEachern, and Gonzaga.
Darren Harris and Isaiah Abraham were instrumental to the team's success. St. Paul VI reached the championship round of the Chipotle Nationals last year and had a regular season record of 33-2.
#3 Columbus (Florida)
Columbus finished last season with a record of 27-4. It won over schools such as Paul VI, Harvard-Westlake, and Prolific Prep, among others. Two of its four losses came against Montverde and one in The Throne championship game.
Columbus won games on a winning margin of less than 20 points, however, the Explorers won 18 games against teams with 20+ wins. The Boozer twins, as well as Jase Richardson, were phenomenal for Columbus last season.
#2 Plano East (Texas)
Plano East finished the 2023-24 high school basketball season undefeated, winning all 40 regular season games. The team outscored opponents by an average of 23.4 points per game. Despite the fantastic regular season run, Plano East faltered at the quarterfinal stage of The Throne championship.
The Panthers won eight games against teams with 30+ wins and they achieved this feat on the back of two outstanding players, Jordan Mizell and DJ Hall. The two were named co-MVPs.
#1 Montverde (Florida)
The undisputed king of high school basketball last season was Montverde. The Florida-based high school went undefeated and won the Chipotle Nationals.
The Eagles outscored their opponents by an average of 29.7 points per game. They showcased their dominance throughout the campaign with players such as No.1 overall recruit, Cooper Flagg, who had an impactful season.
