Safeties are often the last line of defense tasked with preventing explosive plays and locking down the deep field. Their versatility can also make them key contributors on special teams and occasionally, on offense.

For college football programs, signing elite safety prospects can transform a defense that ripples through the entire roster. The 2025 recruiting cycle has produced a remarkable crop of safety talent.

Let's take a look at three safety signees in the 2025 class who capped off their high school careers with phenomenal athleticism.

Top 3 safety signees in the 2025 class

#3. Tae Harris

Four-star safety Tae Harris committed to Georgia Tech last month after stints with Georgia and Clemson. He is the No. 3 safety in the 2025 class, the No. 56 prospect in the nation and the No. 9 recruit in Georgia, according to 247Sports.

Harris proved his caliber during the 2024 Under Armour camp circuit, where he turned in one of the most impressive performances among defensive backs. As a senior, he recorded 1,018 rushing yards, 270 receiving yards on 19 catches and scored multiple touchdowns while tallying 70 tackles (32 solo), seven tackles for loss, three forced fumbles, six pass breakups and two defensive touchdowns.

Harris is a standout track athlete and specializes as a sprinter. His ability to cover ground and close on ball carriers sets him apart. Harris plans to compete in both sports at Georgia Tech.

#2. Trey McNutt

Trey McNutt signed with Oregon during the early signing period on Dec. 4. The five-star safety is the Ducks’ highest-rated defensive back commit ever and also the first five-star safety in the school's history.

McNutt is a true two-way standout at the high school level. On defense, he excels as a safety and cornerback by displaying excellent instincts, range and ball skills. He also thrives as a slot receiver in offense, where he proves his ability to make one-handed catches and create big plays in space.

McNutt was selected by the All-American Bowl Selection Committee last month. He is the No. 1 safety in the 2025 class, the No. 2 recruit in Ohio and the No. 21 prospect in the nation, as per Rivals.

#1. Jonah Williams

Jonah Williams is the crown jewel of the Texas Longhorns’ 2025 recruiting class. The five-star safety is ranked as the No. 1 player at his position, the No. 3 prospect in Texas and the No. 6 overall recruit in the country, per 247Sports.

Williams is a do-it-all playmaker who can line up at safety, wide receiver and as a return specialist. His ball-tracking skills have drawn comparisons to some of the best safeties in recent college football history.

Despite his senior season being cut short by a broken collarbone, Williams proved his elite skill set in limited action. Before the setback, he recorded 12 receptions for 259 yards and six touchdowns, seven rushing touchdowns and 28 tackles while also having two interceptions, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.
