Alabama freshman cornerback Zabien Brown has had a tremendous first campaign with the Crimson Tide. He was named a midseason Freshman All-American by On3 on Monday. He's been making plays all over the field and even had a game-sealing interception in a win against Georgia last month, in what some fans say was the game of the year.
Zabien Brown is a dynamic cornerback who can cover slot receivers and play man-to-man effectively. Alabama has consistently produced good defensive backs and Brown may be the next one up. It's not every day that a freshman makes such an impact on a grand stage such as SEC football.
With Brown having such a good first year at Alabama, let's take a look back at his successful high school football career.
Zabien Brown's high school football career
Zabien Brown played high school football at powerhouse Mater Dei in California. The 6-foot, 182-pounder was very productive for the Monarchs throughout his high school football career.
Per MaxPreps, he totaled 61 tackles, 53 of which were solo, one forced fumble and a fumble recovery, and six interceptions in 25 varsity games played through three seasons.
During his junior season, he accumulated 32 tackles, five pass breakups, three interceptions, and one forced fumble. He played a key part in a Mater Dei team that went 12-1 on the season and won the Trinity League.
For his senior year, he finished with 22 tackles, three interceptions, two forced fumbles, and one tackle for loss.
He was a 5-star cornerback prospect and ranked as the third-best cornerback in the country in the 2024 recruiting class per 247sports. He held offers from schools like Alabama, Ohio State, USC, Auburn, and more.
247sports national recruiting analyst Greg Biggins had this description of Zabien Brown:
"He’s a true shut down corner who relishes the challenge of taking on another teams top receiver. His cover instincts and ability to play tight man coverage without needing to clutch and grab like so many young corners sets him apart from others."
Biggins added that Brown has a good body for a cornerback and has great ball awareness.
Although Zabien excelled in football, he was a speedster on the track as well. His best 100-meter time as a junior was listed at 11.12 seconds.
Brown used a combination of speed, quickness, and agility in high school football and carried that with him to Alabama. Now, he may be on his way toward becoming one of the next great Alabama defensive players.
