What is KBS Gayo Daechukje? History and evolution

Each year, the KBS Song Festival, also known as KBS Gayo Daechukje, is broadcast by the Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) to mark the end of the year. It debuted in 1965 as the TBC Broadcast Music Awards, organized by Tongyang Broadcasting Company (TBC) with Choi Hee-Joon being the first winner.

In 1981, TBC merged with KBS, and the event was rebranded as the KBS Music Awards. It aired on KBS1 until 1994, when it moved to KBS2.

The awards ceremony was discontinued in 2006, and the event was restructured into a non-competitive music festival. However, awards were briefly reinstated in 2013. Over the years, the festival showcased 20 to 30 K-pop acts, but in 2017, the scale was reduced to include only eight groups, two solo artists, and contestants from the KBS2 reality show The Unit. The festival has primarily been held at KBS Hall, except for 2015, when it took place at Gocheok Sky Dome, and in 2019, when it was moved to KINTEX.

In 2023, the traditional KBS Gayo Daechukje was replaced by the Music Bank Global Festival, which took place in both Saitama, Japan, and Seoul, South Korea. However, the KBS Gayo Daechukje will make its return in 2025.

Fans are eagerly looking forward to KBS Gayo Daechukje for a night where K-pop artists from different eras come together to celebrate the unifying power of music.
