5 times the SEVENTEEN rapper Mingyu was tangled in controversies

1) Explicit collage artwork for Chakan Frame

In March 2021, Mingyu's collage was posted by the South Korean frame company called, Chakan Frame. The idol has showcased a liking for collages and has released several of his pieces. However, what caught the attention of netizens was his use of explicit images.

In the collage, the idol reportedly used images of people in their underwear and he received much criticism for the same. However, fans came to his defense by stating that artwork isn't expected to be stereotypical and limiting.

2) School bullying allegations

In February of 2021, several online posts landed on the internet, accusing Mingyu of bullying and s*xual harassment. While Pledis Entertainment initially released a statement denying these accusations, they further went into a detailed investigation of the same. They also met with the initial netizens who posted about these allegations.

Additionally, they also talked with Mingyu. The result stated that some of the accusations were false and others might be true, but the idol couldn't recall the incident shared by the netizen as it happened a long time. However, he cleared up that his intentions were never in the wrong and apologized for his actions. Moreover, the netizens also chose to drop their statements against the idol.

He also wrote an apology letter to his fans. Here's what it said:

"I apologize to the fans for having given you cause for concern. I did struggle while going through this experience. However, I also ended up learning that my actions could hurt someone, even if I did not mean it or remember it that way. It was also a time during which I reflected on what kind of attitude I should take on in the future."

He continued:

"I’m a person who is able to work because of the love of my fans, and I realized once again that because of that, I need to become a more mature person so that I can repay [my fans] with positive energy. In the future, I will be more careful with my actions and work hard so that I can remain by my fans’ side for a long time.”

3) Allegedly spotted at a nightclub with women

The most recent controversy included the SEVENTEEN member being allegedly spotted at a nightclub with women. On July 29, 2024, alleged screenshots between a club manager and an individual landed on the internet. A supposed image of the idol, showcasing his back was also released, leading to more speculations.

However, fans debated that the proof was not strong enough and the person in the image didn't hold any resemblance to the idol. Fans also stated that the idol was busy the entire day to be spotted at a nightclub. They showcased proof of his activity on Weverse, replying and conversing with fans.

Moreover, they expressed that the idol stated that he was at the gym and also had an early morning flight to China the next morning for SEVENTEEN's 17 is Right Here Beijing Fan Meeting Event. However, an official statement regarding the confirmation or denial of the news has not been released at the time of writing this article.

4) Close interaction with a female staff

In March 2022, soon after the controversy around the explicit collage artwork, the idol was found in another controversy. A South Korean YouTuber, Sojang, who's known for posting images and videos of K-pop idols, posted a video of Mingyu and a female staff. The two were backstage, interacting closely and the clip showcased the idol trying to lift the female staff.

While the idol initially received criticism for his actions, fans soon came for his defense. They expressed that the idol is allowed to interact with his close ones and the person who released a private video of him without his consent should rather be held accountable.

5) Dating rumors with Jeon Somi

In July 2023, when Jeon Somi released her album, GAME PLAN, the idol threw a party inviting many of her celebrity friends. When she made an Instagram post on August 11, 2023, about the same, many fans noticed the back of a shirt that strikingly resembled Mingyu's shirt in one of his Instagram posts.

This sparked dating rumors between the K-pop idols. While the news was neither confirmed nor denied by official sources the controversy soon died down as netizens couldn't find more evidence of the rumors.

On the other hand, fans have also been demanding a response or an official statement from Mingyu's agency, Pledis Entertainment, regarding the recent controversy as it would settle the current speculations.
