BTS’ RM is renowned for his songwriting abilities, having contributed to over 187 tracks and counting. Tracks like Moonchild or Wildflower show a melancholic side of the songwriter. At the same time, Change, a collaboration with Wale, reflects a positive and hopeful notion towards the future of the BTS leader.

In a Vogue interview on December 23, 2021, RM talked about his writing techniques. He said,

"In the past I was bound by rules a great deal—like, ‘I should be doing this and that’—and I was preoccupied with showing off certain techniques, etc. These days, however, I focus instead on creating a certain texture that I want to convey in a more abstract way."

He has collaborated with TXT, HONNE, Younha, and many others, showcasing his songwriting techniques and versatility.

Wild Flower, written by BTS’ RM, highlights his incessant battle with his contradictory feelings. The track was released on December 2, 2022, and it is from his debut solo album Indigo. Apart from RM, Mikscod co-authored the song.

It featured Cherry Filter singer Youjeen, underscoring RM's feeling of being himself. The lyrics share that all the desires for fame make him blind, while he wants to be humble, tranquil, and simple, like a wildflower with no name.

The lyrics read,

"When everything I bеlieved in grew distant / When all this fame turned into shackles / Please take my desire away from me / No matter what it takes / Oh, let me be myself"

Crying Over You, officially released in 2018, is a popular track by British duo HONNE. The track featured American songwriter Bekka, highlighting the yearning for lost love.

However, after a year of this release, HONNE collaborated with BTS’ RM for the rap twist. In this track, RM wrote the rap verses in English, which read,

" Now I don't like a cliché, but I'm reading / From the same book all over again / All different covers, all different colours / They're never the same but they always / Make me cry at the end"

Change is another track written by RM. The idea of the track began in 2016 when American rapper Wale proposed the BTS leader for a collaboration on X ( formerly Twitter).

The next year, Wale flew to South Korea and prepared the track, featuring controversial topics like politics, bullying, and mental health. Through the lyrics, the vocalists highlight how Twitter kills humans and how the pressures of studies make children anxious. However, they look hopeful that the world will change.

BTS’ RM croons,

"I left, but can never get to leave once / You say you wanna die, but live it much harder / You say you wanna let go but put on another weight / Thinking of not thinking at all is still thinking, you know / Actually this is our destiny, you know"

Besides these six tracks, BTS’ RM showcases his songwriting skills in 21st Century Girls, Reflection, Timeless, and other tracks. He was one of the songwriters of Dilemma by Homme. Gaeko's Gajah was released in 2018, and BTS’ RM contributed his songwriting skills. Through these lyrics, the leader of BTS established himself as one of the most remarkable songwriters globally.
